Bates debates Yale, hosts national parliamentary debate tournament

The Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosts an American Parliamentary Debate Association Tournament at Bates College. As tournament host, the Bates team won't debate in this competition.To keep the squad limber, however, Bates team members will debate the Yale University team.

Tom Whalen '86 was part of a CNN panel that discussed President Obama's inauguration speech. Whalen, author of A Higher Purpose: Profiles in Presidential Courage, said the speech "overall [was] not a speech for the ages, but a speech for our times and the concerns people have. In many ways, it reminds me of a coach giving a halftime locker room speech to his team that's behind in the game. What Obama saying is that we have to make improvements or adjustment in order to prevail."

Bates study: Accept Somali work experience for GED, language skills

The largest barrier to employment for many new Somali residents of Lewiston and Auburn is a lack of English language skills, according to a new report by a Bates College research group. Somali respondents also voiced frustration that a General Educational Development (GED) certificate is often required as a minimum qualification for most entry-level jobs, regardless of prior job experience. The GED certifies that an individual has American high school-level academic skills.
