Marine biologist to speak at Bates

James Dalby, a research associate in the biology department at Bates College, will deliver a lecture titled “Do Ice Cover and Food Supply Affect Growth of Arctic Brittlestars” at 4:10 p.m. Sept. 18, in Room 113 of Carnegie Science Hall, 44 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.

Portland rabbi launches spiritual lecture series at Bates

Rabbi Carolyn Braun of Temple Beth El, Portland, will discuss “A Jewish Perspective” at Bates College on Sept. 23 in the Skelton Lounge of Chase Hall in the inaugural talk of a new college lecture series, “Spiritual Journeys: Stories of the Soul.” The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Land-mine eradication advocates to lecture at Bates

Julie Groom-Thompson, executive director of the Maine Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, and David Kuhns, a physician’s assistant who has treated land-mine victims in Afghanistan as a member of Doctors Without Borders, will give a presentation on land-mine eradication at 7 p.m., Sept. 22, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.

Pianists to note 100th anniversary of Brahms' death

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of composer Johnanes Brahms, pianists Frank Glazer and Duncan Cumming ’93 will perform the composer’s complete works for solo piano in a series of concerts at Bates College Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.; Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.; Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. and Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. The public is invited to attend the performances free of charge.

Noonday concerts to resume

The Bates College Noonday Concert Series, featuring weekly performances by Bates faculty and students, resumes on Sept. 9 with a program of Hadyn songs performed by tenor John Corrie and fortepianist James Parakilas.

Bates to stage premiere of holocaust diary

A one-woman play based on the writings of Etty Hillesum, a young woman who lived in Holland during the Nazi occupation, will premiere at Bates College in Gannett Theater at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11; Friday, Sept. 12; Saturday, Sept. 13; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept.14.

Goose Cove Orchestra opens Bates Contradance Series

The Bates College Freewill Folk Society opens the 1997-98 Contradance Series with The Goose Cove Orchestra and caller Greg More at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. General admission is $4 and $2 for students and seniors. Soft-soled shoes are recommended.
