Mark A. Kessler, professor of political science at Bates College, has received the Best Treatment of Women and Minority Groups in a Political Science Text award from the Women’s Caucus of the American Political Science Association. Kessler was honored for The Play of Power (St. Martin’s Press, 1996), a textbook he co-authored that concerns the integration of women and minorities into the U.S. government and political system.

Joaquin G. Avila, a litigator and advocate in the field of voting rights law, will deliver a lecture titled “The Voting Rights Act: Affirmative Action in Levelling the Political Playing Field” as part of the Creative Approach to Public Policy lecture seriesat 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.

Diana L. Eck, award-winning author of Encountering God: A Spiritual Journey from Bozeman to Banaras, will deliver a lecture titled Multireligious America: New Arguments, New Opportunities, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. The public is invited to the 1997-1998 Rayborn Lindley Zerby Lecture in Contemporary Religious Thought and admission is free.

Close to 100 lectures, concerts, theater performances and art exhibits, all open to the public, are planned for the 1997-98 academic year at Bates College.

Noted Harvard theologian Peter J. Gomes ’65, will discuss themes connected with his recently published best- seller The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart (Morrow, 1996) at his alma mater at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited to attend the lecture free of charge.

The blues quartet Sweet Daddy Cool Breeze will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 6 in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Admission at the door is $10 and $5 for students and seniors. Reservations may be made by calling 207-786-6135.

During the recent renovation of a Bates College-owned house on 32 Frye St. in Lewiston, Maine, construction workers discovered six Civil-War era letters exchanged between former Lewiston resident Uriah Balkam and his wife, Annie.

The Bates Dance Festival presents Young Choreographers/New Works at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 and Friday, Aug. 15, in Schaeffer Theatre. Admission is $6.

The Bates College Dance Festival, in sponsorship with the City of Lewiston Recreation Department, is conducting a three-week “Youth Arts Program” from July 28 through Aug. 16 at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Central Avenue. Sixty-one Lewiston children, ages six to 17, are involved with music and dance classes Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Casco Bay Tummlers will present an evening of klezmer music on Thursday as part of the Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series. The concert begins at 6 p.m. and will be held on the open-air terrace overlooking Lake Andrews. The public is invited to attend free of charge. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall.
