Bates to host Maine political forums

This winter, in collaboration with the Androscoggin Valley Regional Program for the Gifted and Talented, Bates College hosts three presentations related to the 2010 election for Maine governor.

Former Maine Gov. Angus King opens the series with a discussion of his first Blaine House race at noon Tuesday, Dec. 8, in Chase Hall Lounge, 56 Campus Ave. King will also discuss his legacy as governor, including the Maine public school laptop program that provides every public middle-school student with an Apple laptop.

As climate activists worldwide take part in an International Day of Climate Action on Saturday, Oct. 24, Kennedy Park in downtown Lewiston will be the focus of local efforts supporting the cause.

Rwandan genocide survivor, Berthe Kayitesi, to speak at Bates

Berthe Kayitesi, an author and a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, speaks on her experiences and the rebuilding of communities in post-conflict Rwanda at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Muskie Archives at Bates College, 70 Campus Ave. The lecture, titled “Tomorrow My Life: Orphans in Post-Genocide Rwanda,” is open to the public and admission is free. It is part of the Civic Forum Series sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates.

Bates alumni present public interest career forum

The Harward Center for Community Partnerships, in conjunction with Alumni and Parent Programs and the Office of Career Services, presents a public interest career forum for current Bates students entitled “Beyond the Bubble: Batesies in Public Work” from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the Benjamin Mays Center. A barbeque for participating students, faculty, staff and alumni immediately follows the presentation.

Lewiston recognized as 'All-America City'

This summer, Lewiston has received national recognition by becoming one of 10 municipalities designated an “All-America City” in an annual competition sponsored by the National Civic League.

Harward Center screens film about Lewiston gun control activist

Bates College’s Harward Center for Community Partnerships will screen “There Ought to Be a Law” a new documentary film about a Lewiston woman who became a gun control activist after her teenager’s suicide.
