"Have you voted today?" asked senior Katie Franich as she greeted classmates entering Chase Hall for lunch. Franich, of Milton, Mass., was one of a group of Bates students who participated in a nonpartisan election-day canvass to encourage their peers to go to the polls and vote. She wore an oversized T-shirt that read: "Make them pay attention to us. VOTE November 2."

In next Tuesday's presidential election, Americans have a choice between "fear and hope," former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell told an audience of about 100 at Bates College at midday Thursday, Oct. 28. Speaking in support of Sen. John Kerry and presented by the Bates Democrats, the Maine Democrat was the one of the latest in a series of notable figures campaigning here on behalf of the presidential candidates.

Lewiston High students to take part in research

Thanks to support from the National Science Foundation, a professor of chemistry at Bates College is bringing four Lewiston High School students to the college to help investigate the biochemistry of a particular category of viruses. Professor T. Glen Lawson and LHS biology teacher Jason Fuller are working together on this project that brings four advanced-placement students to Bates today through June 25. Mentored by two of Lawson's research students, the young people from LHS will help prepare cloned RNA from the encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) for use in experiments examining how the virus's RNA is replicated.
