As the highlight of the Bates Dance Festival season, an international ensemble of dancers performs HOT FEET, an evening of American jazz, French- Canadian step, Afro-fusion and jazz tap July 31 at 8 p.m. in the Lewiston Middle School Auditorium, located on Central Avenue. Tickets for the performance are priced at $14 and $8 (for full-time students and seniors) and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 207-786-6161. Following a sold-out show in 1997, ticket buyers are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.

Mark Howard, a member of the Bates College class of 1975 and an ardent reader and collector of cook books, will discuss history through the kitchen door in Cook Books as Narrative History: Two Hundred Years of American Cook Book Publishing, 1796-1996, An Overview at Bates July 15 and July 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center. The public is welcome to attend both talks free of charge.

The Auburn School Department, in collaboration with four students at Bates College, is opening an environmental summer day camp for students in grades 2-8 at the 13-acre Auburn Land Lab located in the C.P. Wight School at the northern end of Lake Auburn. Transportation is available.

Georgia Nell Nigro, associate professor of psychology at Bates College, has been named one of two 1998 recipients of the Maine Campus Compact (MCC) Faculty Service-Learning Award, one of the most prestigious awards for community service in the state of Maine.

Fifteen area residents received bachelor’s degrees during Bates College’s 132nd commencement exercises Monday in an outdoor ceremony on the main quadrangle. Doris Kearns-Goodwin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, delivered the commencement address to an audience of some 3,000.

Bowdoin native Kerry Laitala is one of several filmmakers whose works will be featured at the Museum of Art’s screenings of the 17th annual Black Maria Film, Video and Animation Festival Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Appriximately 18 of the winning entries will be shown in the two screenings. Admission is $5 for each screening, and tickets can be purchased at the door.

The second annual Auburn Land Lab fair will be held May 8, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and May 9, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Auburn Land Lab at the corner of North Auburn and Holbrook roads in Auburn.
