Students explore local need for Islamic banking practices

For some members of our community,the simple freedom of economic choice does not exist. Religious considerations prohibit Muslims in our community from using the American system of banking. Specifically, they are forbidden to use banking products that involve interest or money begetting money.That’s why, at the bank’s request, my Bates anthropology class “Production and Reproduction” took on a community-based research project involving the local Somali population this semester. We explored ways in which Islamic and American banking differ. Our research gave the bank ideas for Islamic banking services.

Friedman '11 tapped by Sierra student group to advocate for tough climate treaty in Copenhagen

Robert Friedman, a Bates College junior, is one of 18 college students nationwide set to lobby international climate treaty negotiators next month on behalf of a Sierra Club youth organization.

Bates novice debaters triumph at Stanford tournament

First-year Bates students Colin Etnire of San Francisco and his partner Ian Mahmud of Milton, Mass., defeated a team from Yale University to win the novice division of the 2009 Stanford University Parliamentary Debate Tournament, held March 6 and 7 in Palo Alto, Calif.

Bates receives $450,000 Mellon grant for faculty development

Bates College has been awarded a three-year, $450,000 grant for faculty development from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York, N.Y. The Mellon Faculty Innovation Fund will support Bates faculty in three areas. Two of these are new, interconnected program areas related to important initiatives at Bates: the implementation of the college’s new General Education curriculum, and the infusion of diversity into the overall academic program. The third area is continuing support for faculty scholarship and research.

Bates students by the numbers

Although the final numbers are subject to change, some 1,660 students are expected on campus this fall and 193 will be attending Bates-sponsored programs off campus. New to Bates are 445 first-year students and 15 transfer students, drawn from a record 4,650 applications.
