Anne Connell '10, Fulbright teaching assistantship recipient

Anne Connell ’10 received a Fulbright assistantship for teaching English as a foreign language in Germany. She feels a deep engagement with the work of breaching language barriers and exploring the circumstances of Germany’s Turkish population.

Emily Grady '10, Fulbright teaching assistantship recipient

Emily Grady ’10 has received a Fulbright assistantship for teaching English in Argentina. As an environmental studies major at Bates, Grady co-founded two student environmental organizations, lobbied Maine’s senators for comprehensive climate legislation and co-founded an environmental leadership training program for Bates students.

Ana Brzezinska '11, Fulbright teaching assistantship recipient

Ana Brzezinska ’11 has received an English Teaching Assistantship from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. These grants support recipients in positions as teaching assistants who work with local students on their English language skills and knowledge of the United States. As the same time, the teaching assistants pursue individual research.

Irene's gone and AESOP's on: a Monday update

With the wind and rain from Tropical Storm Irene long gone from Maine and New Hampshire, the college’s Annual Entering Student Outdoor Program trips will depart from campus as scheduled on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

AESOP and Irene: 2 p.m. update to AESOP's response to the hurricane

As the scheduled departure date nears for Bates’ 2011 AESOP trips, we are closely following weather advisories regarding Hurricane Irene, and will change plans if necessary to assure the safety of all students involved. Given the predicted pace of the storm, we currently anticipate that the trips will be able to leave campus on Tuesday, Aug. 30, as scheduled.

2011 graduates include first students from distinctive math and science program

Among the students who graduated from Bates College last May were 11 pioneers of a nationally distinctive program designed to increase diversity among students in mathematics and the sciences. The 11 graduates were the inaugural participants in the college’s first Summer Scholars program, launched in 2007.
