Peter Gomes ’65 receives Benjamin Elijah Mays Medal

The Rev. Peter J. Gomes, a 1965 graduate of Bates College and Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University, received the Benjamin Elijah Mays Award Saturday, June 6 during reunion weekend at the Bates campus.

Auburn Land Lab fair to feature presentations by students, environmental groups

The second annual Auburn Land Lab fair will be held May 8, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and May 9, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Auburn Land Lab at the corner of North Auburn and Holbrook roads in Auburn. Morse Mountain tax exemption extended

The Phippsburg Board of Selectmen and Bates College announced Monday, April 13, that an agreement was reached to continue the tax exemption of the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area.

Russian literature professor awarded essay prize

Jane Costlow, associate professor of Russian at Bates College, has won the 1997 Heldt Prize for best essay in Slavic women’s studies. The award is given annually by the Association of Women in Slavic Studies. Costlow’s essay, The Gallop, the Wolf, the Caress: Eros and Nature in ‘The Tragic Menagerie’, explores Lydia Zinovieava-Annibal’s 1907 autobiographical novel, an account of childhood in Russia just before the revolution. The author was a turn-of-the-century writer married to the famous poet Ivanov.

Bates awarded grant to support interdisciplinary teaching

Bates has received a $1.2-million grant from the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation of New York City to establish a professorship in interdisciplinary studies, Bates’ president Donald W. Harward announced.
