Retirees recognized at Bates

Eight Bates employees who have retired or will retire this year will be honored at the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon on Thursday . The noon luncheon and award ceremony will be in the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Bui lding. Retirees who have more than 10 years of service to the college will receive a Bates gift chair.

Bates to bestow degree on Maya Angelou

Poet Maya Angelou will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Bates College on April 3 at 11 a.m. as part of the college’s annual Founders Day Convocation. Angelou, acclaimed poet, playwright, educator, historian, actress, civil rights activist, producer and director, will address the audience in Merrill Gymnasium.

MacAvoy named Bates trustee

Paul W. MacAvoy of Woodstock, Vt., and New Haven, Conn., a 1955 Bates College graduate, was elected by trustees to an appointment on the Board of Overseers, filling a vacant position whose term expires in 2000.

Faculty photographer to exhibit images from Germany

The Bates College Museum of Art will exhibit the work of German-born photographer Elke Morris, a member of the arts faculty, in an upper-gallery exhibit, Photographs: German Sites, from Jan. 10 through March 23. Morris will discuss her work in a lecture, followed by an opening reception, at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 in the museum, located in the Olin Arts Center. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
