Orientation for the Class of 2008, Aug. 30-Sept. 10, included a little something for everyone. From moving belongings into residential halls, to baking gingerbread over a roasting campfire, from participating in a Zen retreat and outdoor service work on the coast of Maine to discussing (over a gourmet box lunch) Convocation speaker Paul Rogat Loeb’s Soul of a Citizen, first-year students eased themselves into life as college students. Check out a few of their experiences, now among the very first Bates memories for these new students, in the accompanying slide show.

William E. Little Jr. of New York City has been appointed to the board of overseers by trustees of Bates College, President Donald W. Harward has announced.

Bates College will celebrate “Parents and Families Weekend” Sept. 26 – Sept. 28 with many on-campus events for students and their parents, alumni and Bates employees.

“The Bates Environment” is the keynote for Bates College’s annual Parents and Families Weekend Oct. 4-6, as the college celebrates its new program in environmental studies and focuses on the human and natural ecology of the campus.

Bates College fundraisers completed their year’s work on a high note as both the Annual Alumni Fund and the Parents Annual Fund set new fundraising records for the 1995-96 fiscal year.

Some 800 Bates graduates and their families will return to campus this weekend, June 7-9, for the annual Alumni Reunion festivities, which include panel discussions, seminars and arts events, as well as the popular reunion parade and luncheon on Saturday.
