Modern Dance Company to perform annual spring concert

The Bates Modern Dance Company, under the artistic guest direction of Lionel Popkin, presents its annual spring concert in a series of three performances March 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. and March 29 at 2 p.m. in Schaeffer Theatre. Tickets are $6 for general admission and $3 for seniors.

Painter to discuss spiritualism

William Hart McNichols, iconographer, AIDS hospice chaplain and priest, will discuss A Painter’s Spiritual Journey as part of a Bates lecture series “Spiritual Journeys: Stories of the Soul” March 11 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center. This event is co-sponsored by the Museum of Art, and the public is invited to attend free of charge.

$500K Keck award to support classroom technology

A $500,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles awarded to Bates College will support the construction of an innovative “kaleidoscope” classroom in the college’s new $18-million academic building, scheduled for completion in the summer of 1999.

Noonday concerts to resume at Bates

The Bates College Noonday Concert series continues its winter season with a selection of programs throughout March. The free concerts, open to the public, will be held Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the college’s Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, located on Russell Street in Lewiston.

Bates to stage "The Seagull"

Theater at Bates will stage four performances of Anton Chekov’s tragicomedy “The Seagull” March 5, March 6 and March 7 at 8 p.m. and March 8 at 2 p.m. in Schaeffer Theatre. "Anna" continues foreign film series at Bates

“Anna,” a documentary juxtaposing the collapse of the Soviet Union with the growth of director Nikita Mikhalkov’s daughter over the course of 13 years, will be shown March 7 at 7 p.m., and March 8 at 2 p.m. in Room 105 of the Olin Arts Center at Bates College. Cummings to discuss "Narrative Quilts" at Bates Museum of Art

Artist Michael Cummings will discuss his “Narrative Quilts” exhibit at the Bates College Museum of Art Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of the Olin Arts Center. The museum will remain open after the lecture until 9 p.m. The public is invited and admission is free. The “Narrative Quilts” exhibit will be on view through March 20.

Bates students return to busy campus

The class of 2001 will be welcomed to Bates on Aug. 26 by the sounds of jackhammers as construction crews continue a number of renovation and building projects on campus. Classes begin Sept. 3. As construction workers proceed with building the college’s state-of-the art academic building overlooking Lake Andrews, a student body of 1,650 students will encounter a new coffeehouse on Frye Street and a refurbished Den in Chase Hall.
