Roy Baumeister, an influential social psychologist at Florida State University, visits Bates College to discuss the mental processes enabling individuals to control their behavior at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Keck Classroom (G52), Pettengill Hall, 4 Andrews Road (Alumni Walk).

Called one of “the fiercest, most public critics of the intelligent design movement” by the Minneapolis newspaper City Pages, biology professor and blogger PZ Myers visits Bates College to give a talk titled “The Importance of Blasphemy” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Room G65, Pettengill Hall.

More than 300 Bates students will take part in the sixth Mount David Summit, the college’s annual celebration of student academic achievement Friday, March 30, in the Perry Atrium of Pettengill Hall.

A senior art major’s thesis project has transformed Pettengill Hall’s Perry Atrium, covering most of its three-story glass wall with translucent paintings that flood this popular space with the glowing colors of stained glass.

The Bates College Modern Dance Company opens its 2002-03 season with “Suite Movement,” a program of dances by student and guest choreographers, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in Gannett Theater, Pettigrew Hall, 305 College St. Admission is free of charge, but seating is limited, so early arrival is suggested.

During a visit to Bates College, acclaimed Chinese author He Liyi will read from his autobiographical works at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, in Hirasawa Lounge of Chase Hall and show a slide presentation of his native Yunnan province at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, March 16, in the Keck Classroom, G52, of Pettengill Hall. The public is invited to attend both of these events free of charge.

Bates College will dedicate its new academic building, the Frederick B. and Ursula P. Pettengill Hall, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, on the corner of Bardwell Street and Andrews Road as the highlight of its 1999 Celebrate Bates! Alumni and Parents Weekend.

A $500,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles awarded to Bates College will support the construction of an innovative “kaleidoscope” classroom in the college’s new $18-million academic building, scheduled for completion in the summer of 1999.
