Food historian and cookbook author Jessica B. Harris, professor of special programs and associate professor of English at Queens College, City University of New York, will give a talk titled “The Rise of Creole Cultures in the African Diaspora” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave., Bates College. The public is invited to attend the lecture, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, at no charge. The Bates Dance Festival presents BESSIE Award-winning choreographer Bebe Miller’s Landing/Place, a highly kinetic, visually captivating work for five dancers using dance for the camera, interactive digital media and performance, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30, at Schaeffer Theatre. Tickets are $18/$12 (students and seniors) and may be purchased by calling 207-786-6161 after July 9. (This production is appropriate for an audience of all ages.)

An accomplished musician equally at home with blues, zydeco and a spectrum of African and Caribbean styles, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes comes to Bates College to explore the music of the African Diaspora in a lecture-workshop from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Room 130 of the Olin Arts Center, 75 Russell St. The visit was postponed to November from Oct. 28.

Ali Khalif Galaydh, who served as the prime minister of Somalia from 2000 to 2001, visits to discuss the past, present and future of his native country in a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Avenue. Free and open to the public, the lecture continues a series of events offered in response to the anti-Somali rally scheduled in Lewiston Jan. 11 by a national hate group.
