Porst '11 receives Projects for Peace award to build first school in a remote Andean community

During a community dinner on the eve of her departure from a remote Peruvian community, Hannah Porst ’11 asked residents of this mountain village how she could thank them for their hospitality. What we really need, they told her, is a school. Now Porst has received a $10,000 Projects for Peace grant — covering a third of the cost of her initiative and making it possible for the school to be built this summer.

Bates' Language Arts Live series events span November

Longtime Maine poet Theodore Enslin and poet-artist-filmmaker Cecilia Vicuña take part in the Bates College Language Arts Live series in November. Featuring noted writers reading from their work, Language Arts Live events are open to the public at no cost. The series is sponsored by the English department, the environmental studies and Spanish programs, the Learning Associates Program, the Bates Humanities Fund and the John Tagliabue Poetry fund. Global Lens film series concludes with Brazilian film Margarette's Feast

Manbi, Ecuador

This photo was taken in the province of Manbi on the coast of Ecuador. After a long hike through the bosque seco and bosque nublado we stopped to cut platano and bananas to bring down to the house for our Ecuadorian-American feast.
