Bates to host conference on the Caribbean and the Americas

A group of Bates, Bowdoin and Colby college faculty and students, joined by a colleague from the University of the West Indies, will gather to participate in a day-long conference and roundtable, “Scientific Knowledge, Culture and Political Economy: The Caribbean and The Americas,” Friday, May 4, in Chase Hall Lounge on Campus Avenue at Bates College.

Ethnographer to discuss old, new traditions

Arturo Lindsay, an artist-scholar who conducts ethnographic research on African spiritual and aesthetic retention in contemporary Latin American cultures, will discuss Preserving the Old While Creating New Traditions at Bates Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in Chase Hall Lounge. Latin-American studies scholar to discuss U.S.-Latin American relations

Peter H. Smith, director of Latin American studies at the University of California, San Diego, will discuss “Prospects for U.S.-Latin American Relations: Trouble Ahead?” at Bates College Thursday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives. The public is invited to attend the Muskie Series lecture, and admission is free.
