Contemporary guitarist Claudio Calmens to perform

Claudio Calmens, a contemporary guitarist from Argentina, will perform a program of modern works at 8 p.m Friday, Feb. 9, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall of Bates College. The concert is free and open to the public.

Victoria Wyeth to discuss Andrew Wyeth exhibit

Victoria Wyeth, granddaughter of famed painter Andrew Wyeth and guest curator of the “Andrew Wyeth: Her Room” exhibit at Bates College, will discuss his work and the exhibit at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 and 20, and Sunday, Jan. 14 and 21, in the Bates College Museum of Art, Olin Arts Center.

English professor to discuss biculturalism and the creative process

Judith Ortiz Cofer, professor of English and creative writing at the University of Georgia, will discuss “A Casa of My Own” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates College as part of the college’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Muskie Archives and Special Collections division merge

The Edmund S. Muskie Archives and the Special Collections division of Bates College’s George and Helen Ladd Library have merged and are now housed at the Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Avenue, Lewiston, announced Kurt Kuss, curator of rare books, manuscripts and photographs at Bates College.

Northfield student wins Fulbright Scholarship

Kari M. Jorgensen, formerly of Northfield, Minn., received a Fulbright scholarship to conduct research in Turkey on the transition of women’s roles in Islamic mysticism and Turkish politics between the late Ottoman and early Republican periods. Jorgensen also will be studying Ottoman and modern Turkish.

Scarsdale student named Phillips Student Fellow at Bates

Margot Fine, a Bates College sophomore from Scarsdale, N.Y., has been named a 2000 Phillips Student Fellow and will receive a grant of up to $10,000 to live with a Nepali family in a rural village in the Himalayan mountains while working with the village on community development for six weeks this summer.

Manchester student named Fulbright Teaching Assistant

Jeff Bastien, a Bates College senior from Manchester, N.H., has been named a Fulbright Teaching Assistant by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and will spend the 2000-2001 academic year assisting a teacher of English in a German school.

Malaysian student named Phillips Student Fellow at Bates

Sze Wei Ang, a Bates College senior from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has been named a 2000 Phillips Student Fellow and will receive a grant of up to $10,000 to study the ethnic, cultural and racial tensions encountered by the indigenous Orang Asli peoples of Malaysia.
