Noonday Concert Series resumes

As the fall semester commences, Bates will resume its Noonday Concert Series with weekly performances by Bates faculty and students. The free concerts, open to the public, will be held on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the college’s Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, located on Russell Street.

Class of 2000 arrives

Some remarkable young people — including an inventor, artists and unusual athletes — are entering the class of 2000, college officials say. Bates begins the new academic year with some 1,694 students. That number includes 493 first-year students and eight transfers, according to dean of admissions Wylie Mitchell.

Bates College Museum of Art celebrates 10 years

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Bates College’s Olin Arts Center, the Museum of Art will launch its 1996-97 season at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 with an opening reception for an upper-gallery exhibit by Bates College faculty. An exhibition of highlighted works from the museum’s permanent collection along with “Modern Artists and Book Illustration” will also be on display on the lower-level gallery.

Bates student named Mitchell Scholar

Brandi Richards ’98 of Kingfield is one of 20 Maine residents named to receive a $2,500 scholarship from a fund created by former U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell.

Bates receives major Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grant

Bates College has been awarded a $600,000 grant by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the enhancement of the college’s programs in the sciences. It’s the third major Hughes grant to Bates in the past six years.
