The Bates men’s squash team capped an excellent season by going 2-1 at the College Squash Association Team Nationals last weekend at Princeton University, finishing 11th in the country with wins over Navy and Franklin & Marshall and a narrow 5-4 loss to Western Ontario, the top seed in the Hoehn Cup “B” Division in which the Bobcats were entered.

Bates junior Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) averaged 19.5 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game in leading Bates to a 54-53 win over Trinity and a narrow 71-66 loss to nationally ranked Amherst. He shot 13-for-25 from the field (.520) on the week, including 6-of-8 (.750) from behind the three-point arc.

Bates first-year alpine skier Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) placed ninth out of 58 competitors in the giant slalom on Friday, and 10th out of 58 competitors in Saturday’s slalom, leading the Bobcat alpine team over the weekend at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival at Dartmouth Skiway.

Bates College sophomore Charlotte Green had such an outstanding meet last weekend against Connecticut College and Wellesley that she was named Division III Women’s National Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com, the leading swimming Web site in the country. It is the first time a Bates swimmer has claimed the prestigious award.

Bates College junior Katelyn Drake set the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke during the Bobcat swimming and diving team’s tri-meet against Tufts and Wheaton last Saturday, with a time of 2:09.55, smashing the former mark of 2:11.15 set by Wesleyan in 1993.

Bates senior All-American Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) took first place in the men’s 10K Free Technique race on Saturday at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival, the third career carnival race victory for Ellefson and the first this season.

Bates first-year swimmer Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.) notched three personal-best times in three quite different events, and won all three of those events at last Saturday’s dual meet at Colby.

ince dropping her first two collegiate squash matches to highly ranked Cornell and Stanford, Bates first-year Mimi Neal (Danvers, Mass.) has won seven straight matches at the No. 6 position, including four last week during the Bobcat women’s squash team’s 3-1 week.
