Bates’ own Shalini Sharan ’11 has been selected as one of this year’s “Hire Education” bloggers by The Wall Street Journal. The blogs are posted on the WSJ website by nine seniors at different colleges and universities around the United States as they finish their senior year and “look for work in a tough job market.”

Electionperfection

This week, the student theater organization, The Robinson Players, held their elections for next year’s board. Theater is one of my favorite extra curriculars here at Bates, and I seriously look forward to the monthly club meetings– purely because of the dynamite personalities all put into one room and allowed to interact (and usually explode) over logistics and theatrical choice and preference.

Icelandic Excitement

The Bates College Radio station, WRBC, brought Icelandic band FM Belfast to perform a free concert this past Saturday night for the Bates community. A totally great band that I would never have discovered were it not for the WRBC, the four fashionable Icelandic rockers also participated in a symposium on Saturday, similarly open to the Bates community, in which they discussed what’s ACTUALLY going on in Iceland Bates’ own Associate Politics Professor Aslaug Asgeirsdottir, also of Iceland, providing two contrasting but informed points of views.

Housing heavensent

Next year I’m living in Moulton house, a campus owned house on Frye street that, next year, is an Irish/Celtic Heritage theme house. I’ll be living in a triple two of my friends – and, because each theme house is student organized and student proposed, the house is literally brimming with all my friends. I’m so psyched to be living on Frye street, and knowing that I don’t have to even worry about the housing lottery is such a relief, I’m all set!

Roar Young Lions, Roar

While I am unsure about how I feel about Jacob Zuma as a president, it was really incredible to be apart of a political rally of tens of thousands of people. Besides the size, it was kind of like one big party which included a good message and lots of singing. The fact that Zuma broke out in song and dance after his speech made some level of his popularity clear. He spent so much time making jokes about the opposition that had the audience rolling and closed his words with a performance. Bravo JZ, Bravo.

The calm after the storm

Bates is beautiful in the winter and after another big snow storm two days ago I took some pictures so you could see how the campus is completely transformed.

The Arm Rest: Gendered Territory?

So, moral of the story: Men, close your legs and keep your elbows in check. Women, don’t feel afraid to take what’s yours and when all else fails and you’re in the aisle seat, feign sleep. I know the arm rest isn’t big but in the interest of gender equality, let’s compromise.

Staying at Morehouse yet will miss Bates

I decided to extend my studies at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Last semester I began to develop great relationships with students and increase my involvement with organizations at Morehouse. Therefore, I thought it wwould be best to stay another semester. Also, I had this feeling that Morehouse would continue to help me develop a heightened social conscious as well as excellent personal development skills.
