The Class of '31 Clock gets a faceliftThe Class of 1931 Clock atop the Hathorn Hall porch is a small but eye-catching Bates landmark. Yet for the last few months the clock had, as the saying goes, shown the correct time only twice a day. So the College took it down and repaired it (faulty relays was the diagnosis), and on Jan. 5 Physical Plant staff and a technician from Simplex-Grinnell re-installed the fixed face. |

Orientatition 2004Orientation for the Class of 2008, Aug. 30-Sept. 10, included a little something for everyone. From moving belongings into residential halls, to baking gingerbread over a roasting campfire, from participating in a Zen retreat and outdoor service work on the coast of Maine to discussing (over a gourmet box lunch) Convocation speaker Paul Rogat Loeb’s Soul of a Citizen, first-year students eased themselves into life as college students.
