Summer Newsletter 2012: Anthropology

In 2009, local bankers consulted with Bates anthropology students, including presenter Chomba Kaluba ’10 (right) of Mpika, Zambia, in an exploration of potential banking services to meet the needs of Lewiston-Auburn Muslims. Photograph by Phyllis Graber Jensen/Bates College.

The Anthropology department welcomes Rania al-Sweis, who will fill in for  Danny Danforth while he is away this year on sabbatical.

Dr. al-Sweis brings to Bates fieldwork in Egypt with a focus on medicine, Islam and transnational processes. She will offer the course Medicine and Culture this autumn, drawing on her work with Egyptian street kids and their encounter with humanitarian NGOs in Cairo.
