Darby Ray became the director of the Harward Center in August 2012, coming to Bates from Millsaps College in Mississippi, where she was a professor of religion and advocate for community engagement.

Bringing to Bates more than 15 years’ experience as a scholar and leader who bridges thought and action, Ray came to Bates in part because of her friendship with HCCP namesake and Bates President Emeritus Donald Harward, whom she met at Millsaps in autumn 2011. She succeeds interim director Georgia Nigro, professor of psychology.

The HCCP works year-round to weave the resources and concerns of the community into the educational experiences of Bates students.

We offer paid and unpaid leadership opportunities for students, such as community work-study positions, the Student Volunteer Fellows program and the Bonner Leader program, as well as grant money to support student projects in the community during the academic year and summer.

The Harward Center welcomes new and returning students, faculty and staff members to visit us at 161 Wood St. to learn about our programs or to visit our website. Watch for email announcements about many exciting opportunities throughout the school year!
