This play centers around Marion, a young woman who finds herself married to a man forty years her senior in pre-World War I New York. Fornes, a prolific Cuban playwright, focuses on Marion’s need for safety and love from her fatherly husband, and her blossoming desire for independence in a world that leaves women few options.

Abingdon Square is a thesis production directed by Alice Reagan, a senior women’s literature and theater major at Bates. The production stars Milena Zuccotti ’99, Chris Matthien ’00 and Sean Monahan ’98. The supporting cast includes Jenn Black ’99, Teague McKnight ’97, Arin Arbus ’99 and Michael Ferry ’97. Light design is being done by Elizabeth Moreau ’99 and set design by Jeb Fowler ’97. Costume design is by Arin Arbus ’99 and Darcy Donald ’98 will coordinate sound design. Catherine Kemp ’98 is stage manager with assistant stage manager Joan Reddick ’99. Carin Edwards-Orr ’98 is technical director.
