The 2002-03 winter sports season was extremely successful for five student-athletes. Kelley Puglisi (Scotia, N.Y.), Jesse Carney (Harpswell, Maine), Liz Wanless (Belleville, Ill.), Vanessa Williamson (Auburn, Maine) and Kara Seaton (Wayne, Pa.) all earned All-America accolades at their respective national championship events.

Puglisi and Wanless both earned their All-America awards at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Puglisi, a senior, finished sixth in the 1500 meter run in a school record time of 4:36.18. She garnered All-America honors last year in the 1500 meter run at the outdoor championships. Wanless, a junior, was the top seed in the shot put event and registered a top toss of 50 feet even, good for second place and her first All-America honor.

Carney, a senior, was the lone representative for Bates at the men’s indoor track and field championships. He hurled the 35-lb. weight toss 57 feet and one inch to place eighth and earn his first All-America award.

Williamson, only a sophomore, became a three-time All-American after placing second in the 200 fly in a NESCAC and school record time of 2:03.36. She finished just 1.24 seconds behind the national record holder in that event. Williamson finished fifth in the 100 fly finishing fifth with a time of 57.34. She finished in front of the NESCAC champion, in the event, from Colby. Williamson earned All-America honors, as a first-year, in the 200 fly last year.

Seaton, a sophomore competing in her first national championship, finished sixth in the one meter dive and eight in the three meter dive.
