A member of the Bates class of 1965, Arata is a practicing investment consultant. His talk at Bates will address the importance of cash flow management, and specifically how to maximize return on long-range investments.

Arata’s father, also named William Arata, was a member of the Bates class of 1919 and founded the Arata Scholarship, which began with a gift to the college in the early 1980s and has since grown with additional gifts to support four Arata Scholars, chosen by their peers during their junior year.

Beneficiaries of these scholarships can vouch for the younger Arata’s advice regarding thoughtful investment. “His lifelong financial planning talk still sticks in my mind, especially his advice that you should pay yourself before you pay anyone else,” said one former Arata Scholar. “In other words, make sure you invest in your future.”
