First-year Bates students Colin Etnire of San Francisco and his partner Ian Mahmud of Milton, Mass., defeated a team from Yale University to win the novice division of the 2009 Stanford University Parliamentary Debate Tournament, held March 6 and 7 in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Brooks Quimby Debate Council hosts an American Parliamentary Debate Association Tournament at Bates College. As tournament host, the Bates team won't debate in this competition.To keep the squad limber, however, Bates team members will debate the Yale University team.

The Brooks Quimby Debate Council recently sent six Bates College debaters to the American Parliamentary Debate Association's national tournament at MIT, where teammates Brendan Jarboe '08 of Acton, Mass., and Matt Marienthal '10 of Chicago advanced to the tournament's octofinals. As a result of their outstanding 5-1 MIT performance, the duo is currently ranked 11th best in the country.

Members of Bates College's award-winning Brooks Quimby Debate Council present a lively public discussion about censorship and First Amendment rights at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the college's Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Part of The Big Read L-A program sponsored by the Lewiston and Auburn public libraries, the event is open to the public free of charge.
