The Midcoast Woodwind Quintet, composed of the principal woodwind players of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, performs a program of mostly 20th-century music at Bates College at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell Street. Admission is free.

The quintet’s members are: Linda Brunner, flute; Barbara Burt, horn; Kristen Fox, oboe; Carol Furman, clarinet; and William Kennison, bassoon. Their Bates program consists of music by Vincent d’Indy, Eric Ewazen, Jacques Ibert, Paul Hindemith, Adrien Barthe and Francis Poulenc.

The Midcoast Woodwind Quintet was founded in 1990, the same year the Topsham-based Midcoast Symphony Orchestra began. The quintet performs frequent public concerts as well as at private events and in rural Maine schools under the auspices of the orchestra’s Music-to-Go grant from the Maine Communities Fund.

Here is the quintet’s Bates program: “Sarabande and Minuet” (Op.24-bis), by Vincent d’Indy; “Roaring Fork,” a 1997 work by Eric Ewazen; “Trois Pieces Breves,” by Jacques Ibert; “Kleine Kammermusik fuer fuenf Blaeser” (Op. 24, No.2), by Paul Hindemith; “Passacaille,” by Adrien Barthe, the only 19th-century work on the program; and Francis Poulenc’s Sextet.

The members of the quintet bring a wide variety of professional experience to the Olin stage, including past and current affiliations with the Bangor Symphony, the Maine State Ballet Orchestra, the Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra, the Casco Bay Concert Band, and Castlebay, a Celtic folk music group. Clarinetist Furman teaches at Bates College.
