As dozens of smiling Garcelon Field donors stood by, President Elaine Tuttle Hansen and Director of Athletics Kevin McHugh cut a wide garnet ribbon held by Susanne Jarnryd '87 and Erik Jarnryd '87, whose gift provided the impetus for the $2.6 million, donor-funded renovation of Garcelon Field.

"What we do today is symbolic of what we do all year long," Professor of Religious Studies Marcus Bruce '77 told some 501 new students during Bates College's Convocation on Sept. 7. One of five speakers at the ceremony on the Historic Quad, Bruce's keynote address eloquently wove together an explication of the College's new mission statement with the meaning of "convocation" itself -- and, most importantly, what it all means to the new arrivals.

Bates College opens its 145th academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with Convocation ceremonies welcoming the approximately 500 members of the Class of 2014. President Elaine Tuttle Hansen and Professor Marcus Bruce, chair of the Bates religious studies department, are the featured speakers, with Hansen giving an address on How We Decide and Bruce focusing on A Shared Vocation that the new students are entering into.
