Dear Members of the Bates Community,

As of Nov. 6, there have been 281 students diagnosed with ILI this semester and, following the CDC guidelines, presumed to have had H1N1. There are only three students who are currently ill with ILI, each of whom is recuperating at home. Our protocol for treating students with H1N1 remains unchanged. Only students with multiple roommates will be placed in isolation houses, all others will be asked to self isolate in the residence halls or return home. After a hiatus of a couple of weeks, students have resumed their work in the local community in schools and other agencies.

Contrary to our most recent report to the community, we no longer expect to receive more H1N1 vaccine in the near future. There is a national shortage that is greater than was anticipated. We have a very limited supply of the injectable H1N1 vaccine left and that will only be used for students with chronic illnesses who have not received the vaccine to date. Those students should come to the Health Center and review their medical data by FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2009. If the student meets our criteria, an H1N1 vaccine will be administered. Any remaining vaccine will then be returned to our distribution center.

Since fall recess we have seen an average of less than one new case reported per day, and barring any significant changes in this pattern, we expect this to be our last update concerning H1N1. Once again we thank all students, parents, staff and faculty who helped us through this difficult period.

Dear Members of the Bates Community,

Our reported cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) have slowed considerably.  During the peak of the outbreak 97 new cases were reported over a two-day period.  Since having seven new cases reported on Oct. 20, the day before the fall recess, we have had only four new cases reported from Oct. 21 through today, Oct. 27.  Our total number of cases of ILI reported since the start of classes this semester is 271, including the 27 cases reported prior to our first confirmed positive case on Oct. 8.

To date we have vaccinated 999 students with either the nasal spray or injectable vaccine.  Therefore of our total number of 1,714 students on campus this fall, we can presume 1,270 of them now have some degree of immunity, either from having the illness or from receiving the vaccine.  There are only three students currently ill and isolated, with two of them staying home to recuperate after exhibiting symptoms during the break and the third self-isolated on campus; all other students who reported ILI this semester have recovered and are out of isolation.

We anticipate receiving another shipment of the nasal-spray vaccine for students in the coming weeks, and encourage any student who has not yet received the vaccine to get it.  When the shipment arrives, we will notify you of when and where the vaccines will be administered.

The Health Center will continue with its daytime-only hours through this week, and will resume its normal 24-hour service beginning Saturday, Oct. 31.

Again we thank all who contributed to managing this outbreak, and encourage everyone to continue frequent hand washing, coughing and sneezing into sleeves or tissues, and reporting to the Health Center if you experience flu-like symptoms.

As of Oct. 20, we have had 265 reports of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) since fall semester began Sept. 5. All but 27 of those were after Oct. 8, when the Maine CDC reported six positive cultures for H1N1.  (After three or more confirmed H1N1 cases, the Maine CDC no longer test cultures, so anyone exhibiting ILI is treated using H1N1 protocols.)

Bates was fortunate to have H1N1 vaccine made available by the Maine CDC immediately after those first six confirmed cultures, and we have vaccinated 999 students in several clinics. While no statistics are available, we know that many students with ILI recuperated over three to five days, then returned to classes. No complications have been reported.

Most students went on fall break today (Oct. 21) and return to campus Oct. 26. This return date will be beyond the seven to 10 days it takes for the vaccine to become effective.

Dear Bates Students,

As of Tuesday evening, 115 cases of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) have been reported to Bates Health Services. In line with Maine CDC guidelines, all are being treated with H1N1 protocols. The recovery period is generally three to five days. There have been no complications to date.

As previously noted in e-mail, students who have not already been vaccinated are encouraged to sign up 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at New Commons for the next vaccination clinic, which will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday Oct. 15 at Chase Hall Lounge. The Thursday clinic will administer the remaining doses of the nasal-spray vaccine as well as injectable doses.

Dear Bates Students,

Following our six positive tests yesterday for H1N1, the Maine CDC has allocated to us 900 emergency doses of H1N1 nasal spray vaccine.  With the help of staff from the state, we will run an H1N1 vaccine clinic TOMORROW (SATURDAY), OCTOBER 10 FROM 8:00 A.M. TO 2:00 P.M. IN CHASE LOUNGE.  Unfortunately, the available nasal spray vaccine is contraindicated for any student with a chronic respiratory condition such as asthma.  The state is working to provide a number of injectable H1N1 vaccine by the end of next week for those high risk students with respiratory illnesses, and we will notify you when these vaccines arrive and schedule a clinic.  There is no charge for the vaccines administered at tomorrow’s clinic.

We ask all students who want the H1N1 nasal spray to follow these directions.  We are dividing the 900 doses as evenly as possible across alphabetical increments of 45 minutes each.  Using the first letter of your last name, please follow the time slots that are assigned below.  If you come at a different time, you will need to wait until the end of that time block and IF vaccine is still available, you will receive a dose.  All students should bring ID to the clinic.

A-B   from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.
C-D   from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
E-G   from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.
H-K   from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.
L-M   from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
N-P   from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Q-S   from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.
T-Z   from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Please understand that the Health Center staff is inundated trying to meet students medical needs and organize a very large H1N1 flu clinic for tomorrow.  We ask that calls to the Health Center be limited to emergencies only.  As always, any student with an acute medical problem should come directly to the Health Center.

Dear Members of the Bates Community,

Today, Oct. 8, we received our first confirmed positive results from student cultures tested for H1N1.  We have seen a recent wave of students exhibiting symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI), and today six cases were confirmed to be H1N1.  After three or more confirmed cases the CDC will no longer test cultures, so going forward any student exhibiting ILI will be presumed to have H1N1.

For the entire semester, we have seen 21 students who meet the medical criteria for ILI.  Currently two students are isolated in College-owned housing, nine students are recovering at home, and the rest are fully recovered and back in classes.  There have been no complications and all students have recovered within three to six days.

We will continue for the time being to follow our protocol of sending home students with ILI who live within reasonable driving distance, and isolating students who live far away in our designated isolation spaces.  However, we anticipate that very soon we will reach capacity in our isolation spaces, and that we will then move to having these students self-isolate in their residence hall rooms as outlined in our last message to the community dated Sept. 24, 2009.

We urge everyone to continue to practice sound hygiene habits to slow the spread of the virus.  We will continue to update the community as warranted, and will alert everyone when vaccines become available.

Where we are

We write again to keep everyone informed about H1N1.  While we have not yet seen H1N1 on the Bates campus, as of today, Sept. 24, 2009, we have had nine students experience an ILI (Influenza Like Illness).  The Health Center has sent nine cultures to the state lab to test for H1N1.  Eight of these cultures were negative with one still pending.  Five of these students, who lived within driving distance of campus, went home to recover, and the other four were placed in isolation spaces.  Eight of the students have recovered and are back on campus and in classes, and the ninth just recently began exhibiting symptoms.

Although we have no confirmed cases to date, we need to understand that it is likely to happen.  We will be giving regular updates on the H1N1 situation as warranted and we will inform the community immediately if/when we have a positive H1N1 culture.  Please remain vigilant about hand washing, good coughing and sneezing etiquette, and general good health practices.

Make a plan

We anticipate that the number of ill students may increase beyond our isolation capacity.  At that time, our plan will be to have ill students stay in their rooms.  Roommates of these students may choose to move in with a friend for several days.  WE ASK EVERY STUDENT TO DECIDE TODAY WHERE YOU WILL MOVE IF YOUR ROOMMATE BECOMES ILL. We also ask that you choose a friend now who will bring back a “take out” meal from Commons twice a day for you if you become ill.  Dining Services will deliver an initial box of fluids and basic food items to the ill student.   Students exhibiting flu-like symptoms will  be given access to an online symptom  flow sheet where they will document their  temperatures, symptoms, and  general  level of illness and will be in touch with the Health Center by phone.  If symptoms worsen, the Health Center will direct their care.  Please be sure you have a digital thermometer, Tylenol or ibuprofen, and tissues in your room in case you become ill.

Vaccines

Getting the regular flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine as soon as they become available will be critical to preventing a major flu outbreak on campus.  We and the CDC are strongly recommending that all students receive both vaccines as soon as they become available.  We are offering several regular flu vaccine clinics for all students as our ordered vaccines arrive.  Vaccines for employees have not yet arrived, but a clinic for faculty and staff will be scheduled when they do.  THE FIRST FLU CLINIC FOR STUDENTS WILL BE THIS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th IN NEW COMMONS, ROOM 221 FROM 3 p.m. UNTIL THE VACCINE RUNS OUT, PROBABLY AROUND 5 p.m. There is a $10 charge for this vaccine.  The state is hopeful that we will be receiving  the H1N1 vaccine some time in October.  That vaccine will be free to all students.  The testing on this H1N1 vaccine shows that one vaccine will probably be sufficient, that both regular and H1N1 vaccines may be administered at the same time in opposite arms, and that side effects and complications are similar to the regular flu vaccine.  Complications involve mild headache, sore arm and sometimes  mild muscle aches.  More information is available at the CDC web site.

So cover your coughs and sneezes in your sleeves, wash your hands frequently and make your plans in case you or your roommate becomes ill.  Stay well and informed!  We thank all of you for your continued cooperation in minimizing the spread of flu.

As we excitedly anticipate a new academic year and the return of students to campus, we want to report that during our summer planning, we have monitored the situation with the H1N1 flu (aka “swine flu”).

Symptoms of this strain of influenza have not been more severe than the usual seasonal flu symptoms, but because it is so easily transmitted we have made preparations for handling a busier-than-usual flu season at Bates.

We have been in contact with the Maine Center for Disease Control and will follow their recommended protocols. We share this information with you now so that you can help slow the spread of the virus and lessen the impact on the community.

Preparation before arriving on campus

• We urge you to bring to campus a “flu kit” containing tissues, hand sanitizer, a digital thermometer, throat lozenges, and acetaminophen or ibuprofen for aches and fever.
• If you are currently experiencing flu-like symptoms (sore throat, fever, cough, congestion), please do not return to campus until you are well. (The CDC recommends isolation until 24 hours have gone by without fever and without taking fever-reducing medication.) If you will return to campus late because of illness, please contact the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@bates.edu or 207-786-6219 to let us know, and we will notify your professors.
• Because the CDC protocol is to isolate those infected with H1N1 and we have very limited capacity for isolating ill students, we ask the families of students who live within a 300-mile drive of campus to be prepared to pick up their son or daughter at Bates for recovery at home if he or she comes down with H1N1. If you are within 300 miles of campus, please plan now for that contingency.

After arriving on campus

• Through our Health Center and Residential Life staffs, we will continue to educate students on preventing the spread of the virus. Basic prevention strategies are listed below.
• We encourage students to get the regular seasonal flu vaccine. We expect this vaccine to be available on campus sometime in September, and students can obtain the vaccine through the Health Center for a $10 charge.
• The Maine CDC expects the first of many H1N1 vaccine deliveries to arrive by late October and continue into the winter. These H1N1-specific vaccines will be offered to students through the Health Center free of charge. The vaccine will require two doses, with the second administered about a month after the first. Priority for vaccines will be given to students with pre-existing chronic medical conditions that put them at greater risk of complications from the flu, and the vaccine will then be offered to all students as available. Students at greater risk for complications due to a medical condition should inform Health Center staff of the condition upon returning to campus.
• Students who experience flu-like symptoms should telephone the Health Center at 786-6199. Students should isolate themselves as much as possible when ill — i.e., do not attend classes, practices, meetings, meals in Commons, etc. The Health Center and Dean of Students Office will notify faculty about ill students who are missing classes. Recovery from H1N1 typically takes three to five days.
• The CDC urges isolation for infected individuals. As noted earlier, the College will have only a limited number of beds for isolating students confirmed with H1N1. Again, this is why we are asking parents within reasonable driving distance to come and pick up their ill son or daughter to recover at home. We recognize that ill students will also likely be in the residence halls, because some cases will not be reported to us and we may run out of isolation beds. Whether a student is self-isolating in a residence hall or in one of our designated isolation beds, food will be provided to these students as they should not go to the Dining Commons to eat. Faculty of students who miss classes because of illness will be notified through the Health Center and the Dean of Students office.

General flu prevention strategies

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer. Remember, this is especially important when using public surfaces such as keyboards and touch screens.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or sleeve.
• When sick, isolate yourself from others as much as possible.

Because our Health Center does not open until students arrive on campus, and because the health care staff will be very busy providing the best care possible to students in what we anticipate to be a busy flu season, we ask that parents please contact the Health Center only for urgent needs.
