Faculty in the Bates College departments of geology and of physics and astronomy invite Lewiston-Auburn residents to a viewing of the highly anticipated "Transit of Venus," a rare solar system event, at dawn Tuesday, June 8.
'Lonely Planets' author to discuss extraterrestrial life

David Grinspoon, whose "Lonely Planets: The Natural Philosophy of Alien Life" was published in November by HarperCollins, begins his talk at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Keck Classroom (G52), Pettengill Hall, Andrews Road. Sponsored by Sigma Xi and the departments of geology and physics, the talk is open to the public free of charge.
Getting the lead out tests urban gardeners

An environmental studies major at Bates with a concentration in environmental geology, senior Rachel Booty is researching soil contamination by heavy metals — primarily lead — for her thesis. In particular, she's investigating the impact such contamination makes on urban living. Her research has involved testing plant and soil samples from the downtown gardens run by Lots to Gardens, the community garden program that Booty works for, and comparing them to control materials taken from test gardens on campus.

Maine student discovers low-tech way to purify arsenic-contaminated water

Katherine Heggeman, a Bates College senior from Standish, has discovered a method for purifying arsenic-contaminated groundwater in Zimapan, Mexico. Heggeman, a geology major at Bates, will present research related to her senior honors thesis at the 35th annual meeting of the Northeastern Section of the Geological Society of America, March 13-15 in New Brunswick, N.J.
Bates geologists to lead Great Falls field trips

Geologists are offering an unusual opportunity to explore the 420-million-year geological history so dramatically displayed in the rock outcroppings of the Great Falls here in Lewiston. Led by the Bates College geology department during Earth Science Week (Oct. 11-17), a series of field trips also will examine the significant role played by the falls in the settlement and development of the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Peter V.R. Tilney, a Bates College senior from Kennebunkport, recently returned from a month-long thesis research project aboard the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Polar Sea in the Arctic Ocean.
