Glenn Schmieg, professor emeritus of physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, visits Bates College to give a lecture titled Whirlpools, Dust Devils and Tornadoes at 2:40 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Room 204, Carnegie Science Hall, 44 Campus Ave..

Sponsored by the physics department, this event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at 2:30 p.m. Schmieg’s presentation is non-technical and will include engaging demonstrations and slides.

Schmieg has previously given interactive lectures and demonstrations at Bates. Last January, Schmieg, who has testified as an expert witness on the effects of electrical shock, offered a talk demonstrating the effects of various levels of electric shock on the human body.

Dedicated to popularizing the science of physics, Schmieg consults with museums and started UWM’s popular Friday night series The Science Bag, free science lectures for all ages that entertain and educate on topics ranging from the workings of the human immune system to the balancing act of the Earth’s ecosystems.

He co-authored the book Physics in Everyday Life with Richard Dittman (McGraw-Hill, 1979) and has published research papers on special and general relativity, classical mechanics and classical electromagnetic theory.
