Due to a cancellation by The Jazz Workshop, the Thursday, Aug. 6, Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series will instead present The Piners, a trio that plays “Americana music,” a mixture of various root influences including traditional folk, bluegrass, country, swing, rockabilly and blues. The concert begins at 6 p.m., and the public is invited to attend free of charge.

The Portland-based group consists of vocalist Boo Cowie, guitarist Pip Walter and bassist Haakon Kallweit. The band took first place at the 1997 Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival in Colorado and has appeared at the Maine Festival, Silly’s, Gritty McDuff’s and Raoul’s.

Because of construction on Lake Andrews, this season’s concerts will be held on the main Bates College quadrangle. The series concludes with an Aug. 13 performance by the popular Blue Hill Brass ensemble.

Those who attend the concerts are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating, as well as picnic suppers. The rain site for the concerts will be the Clifton Daggett Gray Athletic Building.

For additional information about the Lakeside Concert Series, call the Office of Summer Programs at 207-786-6077.
