Dr. Khassan Baiev, a Chechen physician, author and human rights activist, will speak at Bates College on International Human Rights Day, Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. in Room 204 of Carnegie Science Hall, 44 Campus Ave.

Ninety-six percent of Bates College seniors and alumni applying to graduate programs in the health professions for fall 2005 matriculation were accepted. Ninety-one percent of Bates applicants were accepted into medical or osteopathic schools, vs. a national average of around 49 percent, according to a report issued on Oct. 10 by the college's Medical Studies Committee.

Eighty-six percent of Bates College seniors or alumni applying to graduate programs in the health professions were accepted for matriculation in fall 2003. Meanwhile, 84 percent of Bates seniors or graduates who applied to programs in law were accepted.

Bates' acceptance rates for medical school are significantly higher than the national average. A September survey showed that 80 percent of Bates students and alumni who applied to medical school in 1999 were accepted.
Land-mine eradication advocates to lecture at Bates

Julie Groom-Thompson, executive director of the Maine Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, and David Kuhns, a physician's assistant who has treated land-mine victims in Afghanistan as a member of Doctors Without Borders, will give a presentation on land-mine eradication at 7 p.m., Sept. 22, in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. The public is invited and admission is free.
Bates to bestow degree on Maya Angelou

Poet Maya Angelou will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Bates College on April 3 at 11 a.m. as part of the college's annual Founders Day Convocation. Angelou, acclaimed poet, playwright, educator, historian, actress, civil rights activist, producer and director, will address the audience in Merrill Gymnasium.
