This local ensemble offers a mash-up of blues, bluegrass and jazz. Blues harmonica player and vocalist Mark Peterson, bluegrass fiddler and banjoist Mike Conant and upright jazz bassist Tim Clough mix all these influences together to produce a distinctive sound, rounded out by guitarist and singer-songwriter Andrew Bohrmann and singer Jane Cooper Pasquarello.

The ensemble Irish Hill, which shares members with the Peterson Project, was originally scheduled to play this concert.

Hammered-dulcimer player Harry Vayo continues the Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, in the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater at the college’s Lake Andrews.

The players are guitarist Scott Williams, mandolinist Roberta Hill, fiddler-banjoist Michael Conant and bassist Tim Clough. Rich harmonies by Hill and Conant round out Irish Hill’s distinctive sound.

In addition to their own songs, they cover such artists as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Lou Reed and Robert Johnson, among others. They have made three recordings: the eponymous “Zulu Leprechauns,” “Mixed Messages” and their latest, “L.A. To Zaire.”

Founded in 1993, the ensemble comprises bassist John Shaw, banjoist and electric dulcimer player John Schwellenbach, percussionist and violinist Annegret Baier and percussionist Jeff Howe. Their instrumental arsenal includes djembe, six-string bass, guitar, dumbek, conga, shakers and cymbals. They have played the Maine Festival, Congress Square Festival and New Year’s Portland, along with such venues as Portland’s Oak Street Theater, the Waldo Theater and the Camden Opera House.

July 15, Anni Clark: Nominated for “Female Vocalist of the Year” at the 2006 Texas Music Awards, this veteran Maine singer-songwriter has released seven albums and appeared with the likes of Shawn Colvin, Richie Havens and Patty Larkin. Audiences love her humor and expressive power.

Clark’s music has been described as “folk, pop and blues with a dash of Maine humor.” Twice a finalist in the well-known songwriters’ competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, Clark was invited to be a judge for the event in 2001. In 2003, she won both “Female Artist of the Year” and “Folk Artist of the Year” in Jam Music Magazine’s Readers’ Pix Awards. Clark also works as an education tech in special education in Saco, Maine.

July 8, Pan Loco Steel Band: Former students at Berklee College of Music and the University of New Hampshire, the Pan Loco Steel Band came together in 1991. Consisting of two steel drummers, an electric bass player and a percussionist, the group concentrates on authentic Caribbean music.

Steel pan players Bob Lucas, a Bay State native, and Justin Petty, who grew up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, founded the quartet in Boston, and they arrange the band’s music. Bassist Gerry Rollock hails from Trinidad, and teaches and plays in the Boston area. Percussionist Sean Skeete has performed with ensembles as diverse as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and Blue Man Group.

The collaboration of Bates Dance Festival musicians known as the One World Music Ensemble performs this week’s installment of the 2009 Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 30, in the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater at the college’s Lake Andrews.

The 2009 series concludes on Aug. 6 with Réveillons!, a band known for its modern take on traditional Quebecois music.

Lakeside concerts start at 6 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays in July and August. Sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates and the Bingham Betterment Fund, the concerts are open to the public at no cost. Picnics are encouraged, as is bringing lawn chairs or blankets.

The nationally recognized Bates Dance Festival brings together an extremely diverse and talented group of musicians. The One World Music Ensemble program promises to be a tapestry of rhythms and melodies from all corners of the globe.

The ensemble plays a vast array of world instruments, including accordion, kalimba, bouzouki, marimbas and percussion, making for an incredible collaboration of cultures.

Aligning themselves with “the current universal . . . longing to ‘return to our roots,’ ” Réveillons! is influenced by the Québécois tradition. The group hails from Montreal and features David Berthiaume on vocals, jaw harp and concertina, Marc Maziade on guitar, tenor banjo and vocals, Richard Forest on fiddle and Jean-Francois Berthiaume as the band’s caller.

Réveillons! is French for “Wake up!” Since forming in 1996, Réveillons! has played reels, jigs, French songs and step dances at major festivals in Quebec and cities around the U.S. and Canada. Learn more.

In the event of rain, the concert will take place in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, adjacent to the amphitheater at 75 Russell St.

The 2009 series also presents Maine-based folk trio Ti’ Acadie, the collaboration of Bates Dance Festival musicians known as the One World Music Ensemble and Réveillons!, a band known for its modern take on traditional Quebecois music.

Lakeside concerts start at 6 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays in July and August. Sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates and the Bingham Betterment Fund, the concerts are open to the public at no cost. Picnics are encouraged, as is bringing lawn chairs or blankets.

Currie has charmed audiences across the U.S., including at Bates, with her layered blend of folk, ballads and Celtic music. A true singer-songwriter with a talent for lyrics, Currie has written prolifically since recording her first CD, No Heroes, in 1995. She has played such gatherings as the Telluride Bluegrass festival, Napa Valley Folk Festival and the BMI Showcase for songwriters.

According to one reviewer, if you watch Currie “you’ll swear, by the end of the night that at least one of her poetic melodies was written specifically about you.” Currie supports her lyrics with music that has been described as “haunting, luminous and spellbinding.”

Currie’s CD Kiss of Ghosts was named one of the top independent releases by Performing Songwriter magazine. Her latest, Waves of Silence, featured as CD of the week on the BBC’s Scottish Gaelic channel. Learn more.

July 23, Ti’ Acadie: Ti’ Acadie, or “little Acadia” in French, is a folk trio whose name refers to the Francophone culture of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, a culture reflected in the Cajun people of Louisiana. Ti’ Acadie features Pam Weeks on fiddle, mountain dulcimer and vocals, Jim Joseph on button accordion and five-string banjo, and Bill Olson, a singer, guitarist and bassist also known as a contradance caller.

The three have made music together since they met in the Maine contradance band Scrod Pudding in 1990. In 1996, united by a love of high-energy, highly percussive Cajun music, they formed Ti’ Acadie. Since then, they have toured together, offering not only Cajun music but old-time songs with tight harmonies, Québécois dance tunes and New England contradance music.

Ti’ Acadie is fascinated by the link between the Cajun and Acadian peoples, and uses music to explore this connection. This blending of styles makes for an interactive, engaging and undeniably unique concert experience. Learn more.

July 30, One World Music Ensemble: One World Music Ensemble comprises musicians from the Bates Dance Festival. This nationally recognized dance festival brings together an extremely diverse and talented group of musicians.

This program promises to be a tapestry of rhythms and melodies from all corners of the globe. The ensemble plays a vast array of world instruments, including accordion, kalimba, bouzouki, marimbas and percussion, making for an incredible collaboration of cultures.

Aug. 6, Réveillons!: Aligning themselves with “the current universal . . . longing to ‘return to our roots,’ ” Réveillons! is influenced by the Québécois tradition. The group hails from Montreal and features David Berthiaume on vocals, jaw harp and concertina, Marc Maziade on guitar, tenor banjo and vocals, Richard Forest on fiddle and Jean-Francois Berthiaume as the band’s caller.

Réveillons! is French for “Wake up!” Since forming in 1996, Réveillons! has played reels, jigs, French songs and step dances at major festivals in Quebec and cities around the U.S. and Canada. Learn more.

The popular family-friendly duo Julie & Brownie closes the 2007 Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series with a performance at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9.

Unlike previous concerts in the 2007 Lakeside series, the Aug. 9 event will be held on Bates’ historic Quad, in front of Coram Library, near Campus Avenue. Rain site is the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Bring a picnic supper and blankets or lawn chairs. Concerts are open to the public free of charge. Since the 1990s, Julie & Brownie have delighted family audiences with an award-winning mix of fun-filled songs and educational messages for kids. They have toured through the eastern U.S. and Canada, written the children’s books The Streamlined Double Decker Bus and A Pirate’s Life For Me, and been covered by dozens of publications.

Brownie Macintosh has been performing since 1965 and has composed songs for the Kingston Trio, the Irish Rovers and others. Gisele Ganz, a Boston-based actress and singer whose credentials include performances with the Boston Pops, joined the team as “Julie” in 2005.
