A two-year, $50,000 grant recently received by the Museum of Art will support educational programming for 400 local middle school students at the museum. The grant supports the museum's Thousand Words Project.

Victoria Wyeth, granddaughter of famed painter Andrew Wyeth and guest curator of the "Andrew Wyeth: Her Room" exhibit at Bates College, will discuss his work and the exhibit at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10, in the Bates College Museum of Art, Olin Arts Center.

"Sigmund Abeles: The Artist and His Prints: 1954-1999," featuring 70 prints from more than 200 works the artist has given to the Bates College Museum of Art, will be on view Aug. 13 through Sept. 19. A catalog representing the first complete listing of Abeles' prints will be available at the exhibition. Abeles will speak about his life and work at the Bates College Museum of Art Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in room 104 of the Olin Arts Center.

"Ed Colker: Five Decades in Print" will open at the Bates College Museum of Art Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. with a lecture by and reception for the artist. The exhibition, on view through Friday, Dec. 18, highlights Colker's career-long collaboration with poets with nearly 50 lithographs and etchings.

John Arthur, author of "Spirit of Place: Contemporary Landscape Painting and the American Tradition" will give the opening lecture for "Notations of Color: Oil Sketching in Maine," a special two-month exhibit of landscape painting, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Bates College Museum of Art. A reception inaugurating the exhibition will follow Arthur's talk. The public is invited to attend both events free of charge.

"Notations of Color: Oil Sketching in Maine," a special two-month exhibit of landscape painting, will be on view in the Bates College Museum of Art from Aug. 28 to Oct. 30. The exhibit features small-scale oil sketches by more than 40 American landscape painters of the late 19th and 20th century.

Ten graduating art majors at Bates College will put their finest work on display in the annual Senior Thesis Exhibition in the college's Museum of Art, April 5 through May 27.
