The 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance at Bates College focused on "Modernizing King: Old Roots, New Struggle." Each year, Bates observes King's birthday by suspending regular classes and focusing community attention on special programming throughout the day.

Inclement weather on Friday evaporated as a beautiful Saturday and Sunday materialized for Parents and Family Weekend 2007. Attending classes, academic presentations, athletic competitions, museum exhibitions and tours of the new student housing and the under-construction dining Commons complemented the chance to spend time with families and friends.

Junior exhibits proteges' photographs

After mentoring a group of boys from Poland Regional High School and teaching them photography, Bates College junior Jacob Bluestone of Huntington, N.Y., has mounted their images in an exhibit titled In Our Hands, Through our Eyes in Chase Hall Gallery, 56 Campus Ave. Open to the public at no charge from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, the exhibition continues through April 9. The display is sponsored by the Department of Art and Visual Culture, with the support of a Phillips Fellowship and an Arthur Crafts Service-Learning Award.
Student achievement is celebrated in fifth Mount David Summit

Photography exhibit depicts Jewish life in the South

The Bates College Multicultural Center presents an opening reception for Bagels and Grits: Exploring Jewish Life in the Deep South, an exhibition of photographs by Bill Aron, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in Chase Hall Gallery, 56 Campus Ave. This photographic essay of contemporary Southern Jewish life features 46 images and text panels that explore home and community life, Jewish traditions and sacred spaces, livelihood and the South's changing character. The reception is open to the public free of charge, and the exhibition will be on display at Bates through Wednesday, Oct. 5. For more information, call 207-786-8376. "Southern and Jewish are two words not often associated with each other," says Aron, author of Shalom Y'All: Images of Jewish Life in the American South (Algonquin Books, 2002). Aron's photographs, commissioned by the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience in Jackson, Miss., portray the Southern Jewish experience through photographs and first-person stories.
Bates photographer captures sense of place

As Bates College celebrates its sesquicentennial year, senior Alexander Verhave of Wellesley, Mass., has mounted an exhibit of black and white photographs titled Bates College 2005. On display in Chase Hall Lounge through May 22, the 20 photographs include contemporary landscape and still life compositions of Bates College taken by Verhave, a geology major and photography editor of The Bates Student, the campus newspaper. The photographic series "portrays the places and sights that have defined my four years at Bates," says Verhave. The exhibit is supported by funding from the Office of the Vice President for External Affairs.
