Project ORBIS is an international nonprofit organization that combats blindness throughout the world through education and hands-on training. The principal vehicle for Project ORBIS’s work is a DC-8 jet donated to the organization by United Airlines. Housed on board the converted aircraft is a fully equipped ophthalmological teaching hospital, complete with an examination and laser treatment area, operating room, recovery room, television studio, 18-seat classroom, scrub and sterile area and library for video tapes, textbooks and current journals.

Wolf, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology who serves in the departments of ophthalmology at Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, has had a private practice in Lewiston since 1973. He is the author of Eyewise (Harper & Rowe, 1982), and serves as chairman of the Auburn-Lewiston Airport Authority. He received his bachelor’s from Brandeis University and his master’s from Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Carl E. Andrews ’40 established the William Sawyer Memorial Biology Lecture Fund to honor William H. Sawyer Jr. ’13, who taught biology at Bates from 1916 to 1962.
