During the third week of October, much of campus was treated to the spectacle of a big yellow crane hoisting the roof of Roger Williams Hall off in big old chunks and depositing them on the ground. By Oct. 28, Bill was all but wearing a flattop -- the exception being a triangle of roof on the Alumni Walk side, with two chimneys, that is being retained.

Watching workers fasten wooden planks to the sides of steel beams near Roger Williams Hall the other day, we got vague ideas about some kind of bare-brick, hanging-fern, exposed-beam motif for the interior renovation.

Paul Farnsworth, unlike Cole Porter, wants to be fenced in. Or at least he wants for the renovation of Roger Williams and Hedge halls to stay within its fenced-in work zone. But his goal, paradoxically, is the same as Cole's: unrestricted mobility. Now, thanks to the end of construction work outside the zone, wandering over yonder is almost as easy as it ever was.

As this was written, on Aug. 20, Hedge Hall was something to watch as a crane swung long steel beams across the blue sky toward the building. There's plenty of new steel in Hedge already, says project manager Paul Farnsworth, but the creation of the building's framework will become more of a spectator sport as it increasingly happens outside the building's shell.
