During the first "Translations" poetry festival at Bates College, in 2010, conference organizer Claudia Aburto Guzmán had an encounter that seemed to crystallize the event for her. This innovative festival presented international poets reading their work in the original language, with English translations prepared by Bates faculty and students. Working with Somali poet Omar Ahmed, "it struck me that I was involved in the true practice of communication," says Aburto Guzmán, associate professor of Spanish.

Presentation to examine humanitarian work at U.S.-Mexico border

Participants in an effort to provide humanitarian aid to Mexican migrants entering the U.S. will describe their work in a Bates College event at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Room G65 of Pettengill Hall, 4 Andrews Road (Alumni Walk). Claudia Aburto Guzman, associate professor of Spanish at Bates, leads this Public Works in Progress presentation titled Representations of Trails of Compassion: Volunteer Work at the U.S.-México Border.
Campus Construction Update: June 7, 2011

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the final days of the renovation of Hedge and Roger Williams halls. On Monday, June 27, faculty in philosophy, religious studies and environmental studies will receive key-card access to the renovated Hedge Hall and be able to start settling into their spiffy new offices. Four weeks later, July 25 is moving day for staff of the Language Resource Center and Off-Campus Study office and the faculty of the foreign-language programs that will occupy Roger Williams Hall.

At its May 14 meeting, the Bates College Board of Trustees voted to promote three faculty members from associate professor to full professor, and one lecturer to senior lecturer. The promotions take effect in August, at the start of the college's academic year. The faculty members are Francesco Duina, sociology (promoted to professor), Baltasar Fra-Molinero, romance languages and literatures (professor), Kirk Read, romance languages and literatures (professor) and Katalin Vecsey, theater and rhetoric (senior lecturer).

Promoted to full professor in May 2011, Baltasar Fra-Molinero is a professor of Spanish whose research interests include the Spanish Golden Age and Spanish-American colonial literature. He focuses on the representation of blacks and their diaspora and is the author of the book La imagen de los negros en el teatro del Siglo de Oro ("The image of the black in the theater of the Golden Age"; Siglo XXI, 1995).
Symposium explores Latin American revolutions

$150,000 grant from Alden Trust supports Hedge-Bill renovations
