Jacqueline Landry, Catholic chaplain at Harvard University, will present a talk titled The Path is Made by Walking: A Catholic Feminist’s Journey as a Change Agent at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall. Sponsored by the Chaplain’s office and part of the series Spiritual Journeys: Stories of the Soul 2001-02, the talk is open to the public free of charge.

Raised in a Catholic Worker community, Landry has spent her entire life asking and answering questions such as: Why would any woman stay in a patriarchal faith community? How does change best occur – outside institutions or in them? What does the future of women’s experience and leadership look like in the Catholic Church? Landry will discuss how these and other questions have formed and informed the spiritual journey of a contemporary Catholic woman.

Next in the Spiritual Journeys series is Stephen P. Huyler, freelance cultural anthropologist, author and photographer, who will discuss Meeting God: A Scholar’s 25-Year Encounter with Hinduism in India at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in Skelton Lounge. The talk will be given in conjunction with Huyler’s exhibit Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion in the Chapel, March 1-21. For more information, call 207-786-8272.

Qamar-ul Huda, assistant professor of Islamic studies and comparative theology at Boston College, will discuss Spiritual Liberation: A Sufi View at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 19, in Skelton Lounge of Chase Hall, 56 Campus Ave. The public is invited to attend this Spiritual Journeys lecture free of charge.

Huda will consider the meaning of the words by Sufi poet and philosopher Jalal ad-din Rumi: “Remembrance makes people desire the journey; it makes them into travelers.” Is it possible, asks Huda, to think that remembering God in everyday activities can also bring about a hunger for self-annihilation? He believes the inner path of Islamic spirituality, commonly referred to as the Sufi way, balances these two worlds while embracing the encounter with the Holy. Huda also will explore a variety of questions linked to the wisdom of Sufism that can assist in personal liberation.

The Rev. Margaret Bullit-Jones, an Episcopal priest, author and lecturer in pastoral theology at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., will discuss “Holy Hunger: Finding Food for the Soul Beneath Our Addictions and Obsessions” at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall, at Bates College. The public is invited to attend this Spiritual Journeys lecture free of charge. Call 207-786-8272 for more information.

Using her experience with an eating disorder to discuss addictions, Bullit-Jonas will reflect on her journey out of compulsive overeating and the spiritual longing that can lead one home. The New York Times called her book, “Holy Hunger: A Memoir of Desire” (Alfred A. Knopf, 1998), “an example of self-examination that is indeed insightful and instructive.”

Sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain at Bates, the Spiritual Journeys lecture series features speakers from a variety of religious traditions who tell the stories of their spiritual awakening and development. “Speakers are invited to explore how they experience a sense of ‘the holy’ in their everyday lives, how their perspectives and disciplines have shaped that sacred experience, and how they understand religion as a resource or an obstacle to the life of the soul,” said Bates Chaplain Kerry Maloney. Speakers may also address the political and social consequences of their spirituality

Next in the Spiritual Journeys series will be Richard Curry, S.J., founder and artistic director of the National Theater Workshop of the Handicapped in Belfast, Maine, and New York City, who will discuss “Through the Back Door: The Spiritual Journey of an Actor Living With a Disability” at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall, at Bates College.

Cluff explains the title of her presentation by saying, “A Zen Master once said, ‘Being born is already a mistake. How can you correct it?’ Zen practice is not to correct the mistaken self but to break through the limited notions of ‘myself’ that separate us from intimacy with each moment.”

Now a freelance photographer, Daniels worked for more than 20 years as a photojournalist for major New England newspapers. Hungering to cover “things that matter,” he documented for four years the life of a Maine woman living with AIDS and found his life changed as a result. He is currently completing a book about Maryknoll missionaries accompanying and serving the poor in remote locations around the world.

Redmont is the author of the critically acclaimed books Generous Lives: American Catholic Women Today (1992), personal interviews with more than a hundred Catholic women, ages 17 through 90, and When in Doubt, Sing: Prayer in Daily Life (1999). In an introduction to the second book, Redmont writes: “It is meant to offer an experience of hospitality, just as I believe that God extends to human beings a divine and inexhaustible welcome: the door is always open, the table always set, the arms flung wide, outstretched.” According to the Associated Press, the book “describes the inner adventures of hundreds of ordinary people she spoke with, a spiritual mosaic, including mellow Californians, Benedictine monks, Zen practitioners, urban professionals and small-town Midwesterners.”

The first woman Chaplain at St. Paul’s University Catholic Center in Madison, Wis., Redmont was the social justice minister at the Paulist Center in Boston, the executive director of the Boston Region of the National Conference (founded as the National Conference of Christians and Jews) and has been involved in dialogue among Jews, Christians and Muslims. She has written articles on religious spirituality for The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The National Catholic Reporter and Commonweal.

Born in France to American parents, Redmont was first educated in France, where she received her BaccalaurŽat, and then in the United States, where she earned a B.A. from Oberlin and an M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School. After 15 years in the Boston area, she moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1995 to begin her doctoral studies at the Graduate Theological Union.

Goldstein’s book explores specific female characters of the Torah and their interaction with society. Goldstein’s chapters on blood and water discuss the biblical sections on menstruation, challenging women to reappropriate traditional laws concerning the body. Her scholarship on God, goddess, gender and Torah reveals how the traditional masculine image of God has affected women’s spiritual journeys.

Sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain at Bates, the Spiritual Journeys lecture series features speakers from a variety of traditions who tell the stories of their spiritual awakening and development.
Next in the Spiritual Journeys series will be John P. Streit, dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, on Faith, Doubt, and Passion: Companions for an Unlikely Spiritual Journey from 4:30 to 6 p.m. March 19, in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall.
