Video: A first-gen student from Maine, Ryan Lizanecz ’20 found a home at Bates

A first-generation-to-college student from Portland, Maine, Lizanecz at first felt “anxious, curious, scared” on campus. The Bobcat First! program gave him a foothold.

Supervised by Holly Ewing, Christian A. Johnson Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, environmental studies major Christopher Castaneda ’20 takes water samples from Lake Auburn. He’s studying nutrients produced by algae and consumed by other organisms in the lake. Related to the impacts of algae blooms on water quality, the research supports community efforts to deliver unfiltered public water at the lowest price. A lesser-known aspect of the myth of Daedalus and Icarus resonated with the senior speaker.

2019 Baccalaureate:Saturday May 25, 20192:00 p.m.Historic Quad Francisco "Franky" Urueta of Facility Services delivered the Baccalaureate Address.Baccalaureate is a gathering of graduating seniors and their families and friends to celebrate the journey through Bates and beyond. The service speaks through the languages of many religions and spiritualities, and celebrates with poetry, music, dance, and reflection.Seniors process into the service in their gowns, and all friends and family are welcome to attend. Seating is first-come, first-served on folding chairs. The rain site is in Merrill gym. The procession begins at 1:50, with a musical prelude before. Graduates will process and recess through trellises adorned with “blessing tags” bearing well-wishes from parents and guardians. For those who have not mailed in blessing tags, there will be a table and supplies for creating and hanging the tags before the service.

Elected to speak by the Class of 2019, Urueta is a well-known Bates custodian, always greeting students with a kind word and his signature fist bumps.

These 10 Bates students were nominated by their peers to share their stories of joy, discomfort, growth, and at least one octopus. Before their performance in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall today, they posed on stage for a memento. Below, Martin Harrison '17 of Beachwood, Ohio, and Essence Hill '17 of Chicago.The Office of Intercultural Education sponsored this presentation, "Stories From the Dinner Table," and the storytelling sessions that built it. Storyteller Jo Radner served as a coach for the students. She said that all the student storytellers were dealing with difficult topics ("the hard stuff") in an "openhearted way."
