Purpose

Active Allies aims to catalyze the Bates Community to engage in doing ally work by providing trainings focused on the practical application of knowledge and skills needed to support LGBTQ+ individuals.

The online course focuses on basic terms and concepts while the trainings are formal and interactive workshops providing awareness, education, skills, and forms of action individuals need to perpetuate a safe and welcoming campus. Each training is tailored to the needs of the audience. Trainings are open to all students, staff, and faculty.

Goals

  • To develop an active, visible, and accessible network of campus staff, faculty, and students to support and advocate for people of all marginalized genders and sexual identities.

  • To foster capacity development within members of the campus community based on the needs and concerns of students of all gender and sexual identities.

  • To encourage active displays of intervention that cultivate a safe and non-discriminatory environment for all students.

  • To promote awareness and inclusion across all campus constituencies that the “transformative power of our differences” includes all intersections of identities including gender and sexual identities
