Description: The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards recognize books that have made important contributions to the understanding of racism and/or the appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures. There are two awards, one for a work of fiction or poetry and one for a work of nonfiction, biography, or scholarly research. Only books written in English and published in the preceding calendar year are eligible. Plays and screenplays are not eligible, nor are works in progress. Manuscripts and self-published works are not eligible, and no grants are made for completing or publishing manuscripts. Submissions will be accepted September 1 through December 31, and the awards are announced in the spring.

Description: The Northeast Asia Council of the AAS (NEAC) solicits applications from two or more colleges or universities in the same region of the United States to invite a distinguished scholar of Japan to give public lectures on their campuses, to meet with teachers and students, and possibly to visit classes. Applications should be submitted jointly by two institutions which nominate the scholars they would like to invite. Institutions with few offerings or small programs on Japan are particularly encouraged to apply. The NEAC will provide a generous honorarium to the lecturer and will cover travel and lodging expenses. The institutions are expected to make all arrangements for the visit and to provide minor support locally.

Description: These grants are awarded to promote academic and other exchanges between the two countries. USINDO Travel Grants are open to any person seeking to travel to Indonesia to conduct field research or other professional projects, including conferences. Description: The Sociological Initiatives Foundation was established in 1999 to support research that furthers social change, including language learning and behavior and its intersection with social and policy questions. Description:
Supports Americans who wish to travel to participate in volunteer opportunities (volunteer vacations). Award / Funder: Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL)  – National Science Foundation
Description: This multi-year funding partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Made urgent by the imminent death of an estimated half of the 6000-7000 currently used human languages, this Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL) effort aims also to exploit advances in information technology. Funding will support fieldwork and other activities relevant to recording, documenting, and archiving endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. Funding will be available in the form of one- to three-year project grants as well as fellowships for up to twelve months. At least half the available funding will be awarded to projects involving fieldwork. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) will participate in the partnership as a research host, a non-funding role.

Description: The NEH Enduring Questions grant program supports the development of a new course that will foster intellectual community through the study of an enduring question. This course will encourage undergraduates and teachers to grapple with a fundamental question addressed by the humanities, and to join together in a deep and sustained program of reading in order to encounter influential thinkers over the centuries and into the present day. Award / Funder: William F. Sibley Memorial Translation Prize – University of Chicago
Description: In keeping with William Sibley’s lifelong devotion to translation and to the place of literature in the classroom, up to three awards of $2500 each will be offered for the translation from Japanese into English of a work of fiction, poetry, or drama (including screenplays), or scholarship in literary studies, broadly understood. To encourage classroom use and comparative research, the winning entries will be published on the Center for East Asian Studies website. Submissions should be on the scale of short story rather than novel, on the one hand, but a body of poetry rather than single poems, on the other. Essays, reportage, and criticism are all genres for consideration. Retranslations of works previously translated, especially of premodern literature, may also be submitted.

Description: The Schomburg Center residency program is designed to (1) encourage research and writing on the history, literature, and cultures of the peoples of Africa and the African diaspora, (2) to promote and facilitate interaction among the participants including fellows funded by other sources, and (3) to facilitate the dissemination of the researchers’ findings through lectures, publications, and the ongoing Schomburg Center Colloquium and Seminar Series. Description: Blakemore Freeman grants are awarded to individuals pursuing professional, academic, or business careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. The grants fund a year of advanced language study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, and similar programs in other countries of East and SE Asia. Where there is no structured advanced-level language program at an educational institution in the country, the grant may provide for the financing of private tutorials under terms set forth in the application instructions. Description: The Louisville Institute’s First Book Grant Program for Minority Scholars seeks to assist junior, non-tenured religion scholars of color to complete a major research and book project, focusing on some issue pertaining to American Christianity related to the priorities of the Louisville Institute. Description: “Institution-building in autocracies and the quality of democratic successor regimes in Asia” – Joint Conference of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR), Sao Paulo, 16-19 February 2011. Judged by the distribution of political regime types, Asia is the most heterogeneous region in the world. While a great number of regimes have remained authoritarian, the Third Wave of democracy spawned consolidated as well as unstable democracies. The panel is devoted to testing the hypothesis that the seeds of democratic consolidation can be sown already during authoritarianism. In particular, it is centered on the question if the institutionalization and formalization of authoritarian politics has aided the consolidation of democracies such as Taiwan and South Korea, while its absence is the root of instability in regimes such as Thailand and the Philippines. The panel is aimed at attracting both single case and comparative papers that strike a balance between empirical data (quantitative and qualitative) and relevant, critical and audacious general theoretical questions/debates. Fairness of geographical spread, gender and academic career level will be taken into consideration when selecting participants.

Description: This anthology will examine the diverse and complex experiences of motherhood and mothering from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. We welcome submissions that explore the major cultural, political, historical, and economic factors such as migration and transnationalism that influence the lives of Caribbean mothers. Further, we encourage writings that represent the relationships between Caribbean mothers and their children, perspectives of single Caribbean mothers, relationships of extended motherhood in Caribbean communities ; and colonial, post-colonial, and modern representations of Caribbean motherhood from literary, historical, biological, sociological, political, socioeconomic, ethnic, and media perspectives. This incorporation of a variety of disciplines and methodologies will give insight to the issues on mothering within the Caribbean context and provide a space that recognizes the significance of Caribbean mothering. The aim of this volume is to foster work on mothering that integrates the disciplines of feminist ideologies, literary criticism, and cultural analysis as well as represent the diversity of the Caribbean islands and Caribbean diaspora.

Across varied disciplines and area studies, the work of scholars such as David Harvey, Arjun Appadurai, Peter Hulme, and Michaeline Crichlow has framed place both as spatial/temporal location and as social construct influenced by modernity and the interplay of local and global forces. In dialogue with these varied approaches, this volume of Sargasso  seeks to examine the ways that place is situated, imagined, constructed and/or defined through inter-relation and extension with sites beyond the traditionally delineated Caribbean archipelago. We encourage scholarly and creative work that examines comparative internal Caribbean dynamics and/or those of the extended Caribbean region, including the US South, Central and South America, West Africa, and other sites within the wider Atlantic region, or beyond. In counterpoint to island, nation-state, or locations distinguished by politicized boundaries, this issue seeks to im/explode regional delineations and read how “placing” the archipelago through intra-Caribbean and extended Caribbean focus may expose tensions, amalgamations, discords, and/or alliances.
