Physical Education Activity Classes

5k Running: Ever thought about running or competing in a road race?  Here’s your chance to learn how to prepare for a 5k race (3.1 miles), race strategies, training and nutrition tips.  And the finale:  compete in a road race! Class Fee:  $20 (entry fee for road race).  Tues/Thurs 2:40-3:40 pm at Merrill Track.

Advanced Conditioning for Track: this class is geared for the student who wishes to improve all skills related to track and field (speed, endurance, agility, jumping, throwing, strength).  Meets twice a week for 2 hours.  Mon/Thur 4:30-6:30 pm at Merrill Track.

Badminton/Pickleball: Pickleball is similar to tennis and played with a wooden paddle and a wiffle ball. Equipment provided for both badminton and pickleball.   Tue/Thur 9:30 am – 10:30 am, Gray Cage.

Ballroom Dance Class: this class is offered for students interested in learning the basic social dances:  swing, rumba, tango, cha-cha, waltz and foxtrot.  These dances provide the foundation for anyone who desires to compete by joining the Ballroom Dance Society.  Students who complete this class will feel quite comfortable and will enjoy the President’s Gala in March!  You do NOT need a partner to sign up.   You do NOT need a partner to register.  Mondays  7-8:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Bollywood Dance: is the informal term popularly used for Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the Indian film industry.  Bollywood dance is termed for the type of dance and singing used in many Indian films and musicals.  It includes various dance types such as Bhangra, classical, folk and jazz.  Check out this style of dance at UTube:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jUBEBbhowE.  Tuesdays 6-7:30 pm in Dance Studio I, Merrill Gym.

Golf- Beginning: this class is designed for beginners or students who have had very little experience with golf.  Proper techniques will be taught, along with rules and etiquette of the game.  Equipment and transportation are provided.  Class Fee:  $60.  Tuesdays  1-2:30 pm, meet at Merrill Gym.

Indoor Climbing: Students will learn the techniques and skills for climbing indoor walls on the newly rennovated indoor climbing wall located in the fieldhouse of Merrill Gym.     Wednesdays  7:30-9 pm in Merrill Gym Fieldhouse.

Kickboxing: this is a challenging workout that features aerobic conditioning using martial arts movements.  Tue/Thur  4:30-5:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Learn to Swim: students who do NOT know how to swim or have little experience of being in the water are encouraged to take this class.  Mon/Wed  11 am – Noon  in Tarbell Pool, Merrill Gym.

Natural Strength Training: students will use body weight exercises to increase muscle strength and tone/shape muscles. Core exercises will be included!  Tue/Thur 5:45-6:45 pm PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Racquetball: all skills, game rules and strategies will be taught for the singles and doubles game.  Equipment is provided.  Mon/Wed  10-10:50 am in Merrill Gym.

Self Defense 101 - Muay Boran: Most self-defense courses have Karate movements, ideas and techniques at their core while incorporating other styles and techniques into the framework.  this class adopts a different approach of self-defense which, at its core, is based around Muay Boran, a tradition Thai martial art which is the basis of Muay Thai kick boxing.  The class will also teach elements of Karate, Ju-Jitsu, wrestling and other styles in order to create a new and eclectic form of self-defense.  No special clothing is required but students should come prepared to exercise. Tue/Thur 7-8 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Squash: Students will be taught proper techniques of playing softball squash, along with the rules of the game.  Equipment will be provided.  Classes for the first half of the semester will be held in Merrill Gym, with the last half at the Bates Squash Center.  Transportation will be provided. Tue/Thur  11 am – 11:50 am  at Merrill Gym.

Strength Training, Co-ed: 2 different classes offered.  Students will be taught proper techniques for all equipment in the Davis Fitness Center.  Specialized programs will be designed for each participant.  Mon/Wed  11-11:50 am  or Tue/Thurs 11-11:50 am in the Davis Fitness Center, Underhill Arena.

Stroke Development: Early Bird Workout!  This class provides technical instruction to improve your swim strokes or learn new ones.  Tue/Thur  6:30-7:30 am Tarbell Pool in Merrill Gym.

Tennis: for beginners and intermediate players.  Proper techniques, singles, doubles, and rules of the game will be taught.  Equipment will be provided.  Students must wear non-marking tennis or basketball sneakers;  no cross trainers or running shoes are allowed! Tue/Thur   9:30-10:30 am  at Wallach Tennis Center.

Wiffleball: love to play the indoor game?  Join this class to improve your skills and have a great time exercising!  Comfortable clothes and sneakers are required.  All equipment is provided. Mon/Wed  8:30-9:20 am in Gray Cage.

Zumba: a fitness class that combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow.  The name Zumba is derived from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun.  Instpired by Latin dance and music, Zumba uses a variety of styles in its routines, including salsa, meringue, cumbia, reggaeton, hip-hop, pop and dance hall.  Music selections include both fast and slow rhythms to help tone and sculpt the body. Mon/Wed  4:30-5:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Yoga Classes - NEW Format!

Students will have the opportunity to experience 4 different styles of yoga in pursuit of earning PE credit.  To earn credit, the student will need to attend any 2 Yoga classes each week during the 10 week PE semester, using the tracking card to record attendance.  Students may borrow one of the 20 yoga mats but because class attendance generally exceeds the number of mats available, it is recommended you purchase your own mat (Bates Bookstore or local fitness store).  Students must wear comfortable clothes and are encouraged to bring a towel.

Hatha Yoga (all levels): this class will find its focus in the most traditional form of yoga, hatha yoga.  Moving into asanas (or postures), you’ll remain there using your breath to both focus and deepen the posture, and as one means of remaining strong in the pose.  Most poses are held for 3-5 breaths.  Classes will generally be different each time and be tailored to meet the goals and needs of those practicing (to the extent possible).  And of course, each class will end with a sustained period of deep relaxation (shivasana).  Hatha yoga is accessible for everyone whether you’ve been practicing for years or have never tried yoga before.  Mondays  4:30-5:30 pm in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall.

Kripalu Yoga (all levels): in Kripalu Yoga, the body is used as a vehicle for knowing one’s true self.  It can have profound effects on the mind and emotions, helping people experience health in mind, body and spirit.  You’ll learn breathing exerccises, stretches, postures and posture flows to reduce anxiety and stress, and increase flexibility, strength, endurance and energy.  Classes end with a relaxation period, leaving you calm, centered, awake and awared.  Kripalu Yoga is a gentle practice open to all levels.  Wednesdays  2:30-3:45 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Radiant Vinyasa (all levels): Radiant Vinyasa is a dynamic blend of vigorous and energetic-based flow.  In a Radiant Vinyasa class, be prepared to sweat, laugh, and experience the life energy that resides within you!  Radiant Vinyasa is open to all levels, especially those with an open mind and heart!  Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-5:30 pm in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall.

Vinyasa Flow (all levels): this class is geared towards intermediate/more experienced yogis, who are looking to advance their practice with an energetic flow class.  A working knowledge of basic asanas is necessary, but students are welcome to modify poses as needed.  While this class will focus on moving into more challenging asanas, it will end with a 10-15 minute meditation. Fridays 7:30-8:30 am and Fridays 4:30-5:30 pm in Skelton Lounge, Chase Hall.
