Physical Education Activity Classes
Advanced Conditioning for Track: this class is geared for the student who wishes to improve all skills related to track and field (speed, endurance, agility, jumping, throwing, strength). Meets twice a week for 2 hours. Mon/Thur 4:30-6:00 pm at Merrill Track.
Badminton/Pickleball: Pickleball is similar to tennis and played with a wooden paddle and a wiffle ball. Equipment provided for both badminton and pickleball. Tue/Thur 9:30 am – 10:30 am in Gray Cage.
Ballroom Dance Class: this class is offered for students interested in learning the basic social dances: swing, rumba, tango, cha-cha, waltz and foxtrot. These dances provide the foundation for anyone who desires to compete by joining the Ballroom Dance Society. Students who complete this class will feel quite comfortable and will enjoy the President’s Gala in March! You do NOT need a partner to sign up. You do NOT need a partner to register. Mondays 7-8:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.
Ballroom Dance Society: this class is offered for students wishing to compete in ballroom dance intercollegiate competition. Mondays 8:30-10:30pm, PE Room, Merrill Gym.
Boot Camp: is a class geared for the student who wants to be physically challenged! Emphasis will be on high intensity strength & conditioning with a focus on flexibility, core strength, cardiovascular fitness and total body development. Sign up for the NEW Bates Boot Camp class and get in the best shape of your life! Mondays/Wednesdays 3:00-4:00pm in Merrill Gym.
Golf- Beginning: this class is designed for beginners or students who have had very little experience with golf. Proper techniques will be taught, along with rules and etiquette of the game. Equipment and transportation are provided. Class Fee: $60. Tuesdays 1-2:30 pm, meet at Merrill Gym.
Learn to Swim: students who do NOT know how to swim or have little experience of being in the water are encouraged to take this class. Class size is limited to 6. Mon/Wed 10:00-11:00am in Tarbell Pool, Merrill Gym.
Race/Train for 5K: Here’s your chance to learn how to prepare for a 5K race (3.1 miles), race strategies, training and nutrition tips; And the finale: compete in a road race! Fee $20 (pays the entry fee for the road race).Tuesday/Thursdays 8:00-8:50am, Meet at Merrill Gym Fieldhouse.
Racquetball: 2 classes will be offered. All skills, game rules and strategies will be taught for the singles game. Equipment is provided. Class size is limited to 6. Tue/Thu 11:00-12:00pm ; Tue/Thur 2:30-3:30 pm Racquet Courts in Merrill Gym.
RAD Self Defense for Women: a time-tested self defense class developed by police officers and taught by Bates Security Officer, Paul Menice. Specific defensive tactics and strategies will be taught for various situations, with women having the opportunity to physically defend themselves from attacks. Tuesdays 4:00-5:30pm, PE Room in Merrill Gym.
Squash: Students will be taught proper techniques of playing softball squash, along with the rules of the game. Equipment will be provided. Classes for the first half of the semester will be held in Merrill Gym, with the last half at the Bates Squash Center. Transportation will be provided. Class size is limited to 6. Tue/Thur 1:00-2:00pm at Merrill Gym.
Strength Training, Co-ed: Students will be taught proper techniques for all equipment in the Davis Fitness Center. Specialized programs will be designed for each participant. Tue/Thurs 9:00-10:00am, in Davis Fitness Center, Underhill Ice Arena.
Stroke Development: Early Bird Workout! This class provides technical instruction to improve your swim strokes or learn new ones. Tue/Thur 6:00-7:30 am at Tarbell Pool, Merrill Gym.
Tennis: for beginners and intermediate players. Proper techniques, singles, doubles, and rules of the game will be taught. Students must wear non-marking tennis or basketball sneakers; no cross trainers or running shoes are allowed! Equipment will be provided. Tue/Thur 8:30-9:30 am at Merrill Tennis Courts.
Wiffleball: love to play the indoor game? Join this class to improve your skills and have a great time exercising! Comfortable clothes and sneakers are required. All equipment is provided. Mon/Wed 8:30-9:30 am in Gray Cage.
Yoga Classes – NEW Format!
Students will have the opportunity to experience 4 different styles of yoga in pursuit of earning PE credit. To earn credit, the student will need to attend any 2 Yoga classes each week during the 10 week PE semester, using the tracking card to record attendance. Students may borrow one of the 20 yoga mats but because class attendance generally exceeds the number of mats available, it is recommended you purchase your own mat (Bates Bookstore or local fitness store). Students must wear comfortable clothes and are encouraged to bring a towel.
Vinyasa Flow (all levels): this class is geared towards intermediate/more experienced yogis, who are looking to advance their practice with an energetic flow class. A working knowledge of basic asanas is necessary, but students are welcome to modify poses as needed. While this class will focus on moving into more challenging asanas, it will end with a 10-15 minute meditation.
Kula Cross Training Yoga: this is a class that incorporates yoga and cross fit. A blend of yoga, intense cardio intervals and weight training for a complete full body and mind workout. This class is also focused on community, as encouraging each other throughout is essential. It works to build strength physically and mentally that can benefit us in our everyday hectic lives.

DNTH 270W Studio Pilates – An introduction to the exercises and principles of classical pilates. This course is designed for physical performers, but useful for bodies of all kinds.
