Physical Education Activity Classes

Advanced Conditioning for Track: this class is geared for the student who wishes to improve all skills related to track and field (speed, endurance, agility, jumping, throwing, strength).  Meets twice a week for 2 hours.  Mon/Thur  4:30-6:30 pm at Merrill Track.

Badminton/Pickleball: Pickleball is similar to tennis and played with a wooden paddle and a wiffle ball. Equipment provided for both badminton and pickleball. Tue/Thur  9:30 am – 10:30 am in Gray Cage.  

Ballroom Dance Class: this class is offered for students interested in learning the basic social dances:  swing, rumba, tango, cha-cha, waltz and foxtrot.  These dances provide the foundation for anyone who desires to compete by joining the Ballroom Dance Society.  Students who complete this class will feel quite comfortable and will enjoy the President’s Gala in March!  You do NOT need a partner to sign up.   You do NOT need a partner to register.  Mondays  7-8:30 pm in Plavin Dance Studio, Merrill Gym.

Bollywood Dance: is the informal term popularly used for Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the Indian film industry.  Bollywood dance is termed for the type of dance and singing used in many Indian films and musicals.  It includes various dance types such as Bhangra, classical, folk and jazz.  Check out this style of dance at UTube:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jUBEBbhowE.  Tuesdays  5:45-7:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Boot Camp: is a class geared for the student who wants to be physically challenged!  Emphasis will be on high intensity strength & conditioning with a focus on flexibility, core strength, cardiovascular fitness and total body development.  Sign up for the NEW Bates Boot Camp class and get in the best shape of your life!  Mondays/Wednesdays  4:30-5:30 pm in PE Room, Merrill Gym.

Golf- Beginning: this class is designed for beginners or students who have had very little experience with golf.  Proper techniques will be taught, along with rules and etiquette of the game.  Equipment and transportation are provided.  Class Fee:  $60Tuesdays  1-2:30 pm, meet at Merrill Gym.    

Indoor Climbing: Students will learn the techniques and skills for climbing indoor walls on the newly rennovated indoor climbing wall located in the Fieldhouse of Merrill Gym.   Wednesdays  7:30-9 pm in Merrill Gym Fieldhouse.  

Learn to Swim: students who do NOT know how to swim or have little experience of being in the water are encouraged to take this class. Class size is limited to 6.    Mon/Wed  1:10-2:10 pm in Tarbell Pool, Merrill Gym.  

Racquetball: 2 classes will be offered.  All skills, game rules and strategies will be taught for the singles game.  Equipment is provided.  Class size is limited to 6.    Mon/Wed  10-10:50 am;  Tue/Thur 2:30-3:20 pm  Racquet Courts in Merrill Gym.  

RAD Self Defense for Women:  a time-tested self defense class developed by police officers and taught by Bates Security Officer, Paul Menice.  Specific defensive tactics and strategies will be taught for various situations, with women having the opportunity to physically defend themselves from attacks. Wednesdays  11 am – 12:30 pm, PE Room in Merrill Gym.

Squash: Students will be taught proper techniques of playing softball squash, along with the rules of the game.  Equipment will be provided.  Classes for the first half of the semester will be held in Merrill Gym, with the last half at the Bates Squash Center.  Transportation will be provided. Class size is limited to 6.  Tue/Thur  11 am – 11:50 am  at Merrill Gym. 

Strength Training, Co-ed: 2 different classes offered.  Students will be taught proper techniques for all equipment in the Davis Fitness Center.  Specialized programs will be designed for each participant.  Mon/Wed  11-11:50 am or Tue/Thurs 11-11:50 am in Davis Fitness Center, Underhill Ice Arena. 

Stroke Development: Early Bird Workout!  This class provides technical instruction to improve your swim strokes or learn new ones.  Tue/Thur  6:30-7:30 am at Tarbell Pool, Merrill Gym.

Tennis: for beginners and intermediate players.  Proper techniques, singles, doubles, and rules of the game will be taught.  Students must wear non-marking tennis or basketball sneakers;  no cross trainers or running shoes are allowed!  Equipment will be provided.  Tue/Thur  9:30-10:30 am at Wallach Tennis Center. 

Wiffleball: love to play the indoor game?  Join this class to improve your skills and have a great time exercising!  Comfortable clothes and sneakers are required.  All equipment is provided. Mon/Wed  8:30-9:20 am in Gray Cage. CANCELED!

Zumba: 1class will be offered!  This is a fitness class that combines Latin rhythms with cardiovascular exercise to create an aerobic routine that is fun and easy to follow.  The name Zumba is derived from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun.  Inspired by Latin dance and music, Zumba uses a variety of styles in its routines, including salsa, meringue, cumbia, reggaeton, hip-hop, pop and dance hall.  Music selections include both fast and slow rhythms to help tone and sculpt the body.  Mon/Wed  5:45-6:45 pm  in PE Room, Merrill Gym.  

Yoga Classes - NEW Format!

Students will have the opportunity to experience 4 different styles of yoga in pursuit of earning PE credit.  To earn credit, the student will need to attend any 2 Yoga classes each week during the 10 week PE semester, using the tracking card to record attendance.  Students may borrow one of the 20 yoga mats but because class attendance generally exceeds the number of mats available, it is recommended you purchase your own mat (Bates Bookstore or local fitness store).  Students must wear comfortable clothes and are encouraged to bring a towel.

Alignment-Focused Flow (all levels):  this class is inspired by the YogaWorks teaching method, which is centered around providing students with correct alignment in postures so that yoga can be established as a lifelong practice. Classes will consist of an energetic flow designed to warm-up the body for a peak asana.  A cool down and a short supine meditation will leave students feeling energetically balanced.  Fridays 12:15-1:15 pm in Chase Hall Lounge, Chase Hall. Lotus Flow (all levels):  is a unique and dynamic form of Vinyasa yoga that allows us to learn to dance like ourselves.  Classes include music, chanting, and lots of movement!  This class is open to everyone, especially those who are willing to try something new!  Thursdays  4:30-5:30 pm in Chase Hall Lounge, Chase Hall.

Radiant Vinyasa (all levels): Radiant Vinyasa is a dynamic blend of vigorous and energetic-based flow.  In a Radiant Vinyasa class, be prepared to sweat, laugh, and experience the life energy that resides within you!  Radiant Vinyasa is open to all levels, especially those with an open mind and heart!  2 classes:  Tuesdays & Thursdays  4:30-5:45 pm in Chase Hall Lounge, Chase Hall.    

Vinyasa Flow (all levels): this class is geared towards intermediate/more experienced yogis, who are looking to advance their practice with an energetic flow class.  A working knowledge of basic asanas is necessary, but students are welcome to modify poses as needed.  While this class will focus on moving into more challenging asanas, it will end with a 10-15 minute meditation.  2 classes:  Tuesdays  4:30-5:30 pm in Chase Hall Lounge, Chase Hall;  Thursdays  Noon – 1 pm in Dance Studio, Merrill Gym.
