POSTER MECHANICS
You have decided to do a poster and have read through "Preparing an Effective Poster" and are now ready to put your poster altogether. Here are some do's and don'ts to help make this experience as uncomplicated as possible.
1) Printed poster size should not be larger than 36"H x 48"W. Most large-format poster printers are set up for this size, and our poster display system is designed to accommodate 36"H x 48"W posters.
2) If you are having your poster printed on a large format printer, your poster needs to be ready by Tuesday, March 25 at 9 a.m. Posters need to be horizontal or landscape for them to be displayed.
The following individuals print large-format posters:
Greg Anderson (ganderso@bates.edu): Biology, biochemistry and neuroscience posters;
Brian Pfohl (bpfohl@bates.edu): Posters for ALL departments and programs in Pettengill Hall;
Dyk Eusden (deusden@bates.edu): Geology posters;
Will Ash (wash@bates.edu): Chemistry, physics, and ES posters, and poster for all other departments and programs not noted above.
3) There is a charge ($10) for printing each printed poster (36 x 48” on glossy stock). To pay for poster printing you can 1) buy a voucher for $10 at the BOOKSTORE and present it to the person printing your poster, or 2) see if your department or program will pay for the poster. In this case, you need to get a department poster printing order form approved by someone in your department (professor, AI, etc.) To print that form go to http://www.bates.edu/Prebuilt/dept-poster-print-order.pdf. You present the approved form to the person printing the poster. Some departments (like geology) have their own printer and may print for majors without charge.
IMPORTANT! Make sure your department or program cannot pay for your poster before you buy a voucher as it is NONREFUNDABLE! If you buy one and don’t use it, you cannot return it to the bookstore. Give it away, sell it, auction it, but don’t try to return it.
4) If you are doing a "traditional" poster, you may use one or two sheets of poster board (available in the book store for about $.69) and attach your 8.5 x 11s, photos, and other materials. This type of poster should be assembled before the poster session!
5) Backboards for support will be provided for the printed posters and also for the poster boards. These backboards are only for support, so don't plan to attach your poster materials directly to them.
6) Clips and tape will be provided for mounting purposes of completed posters to the backboards.
7) Remember to put your name on the front of your poster.
8) Submitting your completed poster to the Dean of Faculty's Office the day before or to the Reception Area in Pettengill is highly recommended. If you are able to do this, then your poster will be set up for you in advance.
9) If you are unable to submit your completed poster ahead of time, then you need to come with your poster at least 15 minutes before your session starts to set up your poster.
10) THIS YEAR WE MUST LIMIT POSTERS TO 110 (55 in each session) SO POSTER REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FIRST-COME, FIRST SERVED! And remember, your registration must be approved by your faculty project advisor before we count you in!
Once your poster is set up at the poster session, you are now ready to share your research/experience with many interested faculty and peers!
