The Proxy Server is one way Bates provides off-campus access to Library databases. Please consult the Proxy Server Setup Instructions for step by step details for the various web browser configurations ONLY if you are not prompted for your username and password after clicking on the Ladd catalog link for the index or database.
Note: Naxos streaming audio requires the proxy server setup.
Why do I need access?
If you connect to the internet using a non-Bates internet service provider (ISP) such as AOL or RoadRunner, you will not have access to the full-range of our subscription databases without configuring the Bates proxy server.
If you connect to the internet using the Bates PPP dial-in, you do not need to use the proxy server or login with username and password. This connection to the indexes and databases acts exactly as if you were on campus.
What is the proxy server?
The proxy server is a separate web server which identifies you as an authorized Bates user when you’re connecting via a non-Bates internet service provider. When trying to access subscription-based online indexes, databases, and periodicals using an ISP other than Bates, the proxy server prompts you for your abacus ID and password, and allows you access whether you’re in Lewiston, Boston, or Quito.
When should I use it?
You should use the proxy server if you connect to the internet via a non-Bates ISP and require access to online research resources, if you are not prompted to enter your Bates username and password.
If you connect to the internet using the Bates PPP dial-in, you do not need to use the proxy server or login.
If you’re not using Bates research resources during your time online, you may want to turn off the proxy server script in your browser. Doing so will save time when accessing non-Bates resources.
How do I use it?
Connect to the internet as you ordinarily do using your non-Bates ISP.
