If you are not prompted for a Bates username and password, these instructions explain how to connect to the proxy server, which identifies you as an authorized Bates user when you're connecting via a non-Bates internet service provider. When configured properly, any Bates web page that requires proxy server access will ask for your network user name and password before loading. Included are configuration settings for Firefox (windows and macintosh), Internet Explorer (windows only), and Safari (macintosh only).

FIREFOX: FOR WINDOWS OR MACINTOSH (OS 10-10.4):
To enable the proxy server:

  • Open Firefox
  • From the Tools menu, select Options
  • Under the Advanced Category
  • Click on Network tab
  • Click Automatic Proxy Configuration URL radio button
    Type this URL:
    http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  • Click Reload, then Click OK
For Macintosh OS 10.4.2:
  • In Firefox, Under Menu > Preferences > General > Connection Settings...
  • Select Automatic Proxy Configuration URL
  • Type URL: http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  • Click reload
  • then Click OK
When you try and access one of the pages, you will be prompted for your bates username and password.

To disable the proxy server:
  • Reselect Direct Connnection to the Internet
  • Click OK and restart Firefox.

INTERNET EXPLORER: (FOR WINDOWS ONLY)
To enable the proxy server:
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
  • Go to the Connections tab
FOR DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS:
  • Click ONCE on the entry for your ISP - to highlight it
  • Click on the Settings button (NOT LAN settings)
FOR CABLE MODEM OR DSL:
  • Click on LAN settings, (Local Area Network) skip to step 6
  • Put a check in the boxes next to
    • "Automatically detect settings"
    • "Use automatic configuration"
    • In the text box labeled "Address" enter the URL:
      http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
!! IMPORTANT !! DO NOT CHECK "Use a Proxy Server"
  • Click OK
    • Click OK again to close the Internet Options window and save these settings
  • Reload or Restart Internet Explorer
  • To disable the proxy server:
  • Deselect the "Use automatic configuration" button (Step 6)
  • Reload or Restart Internet Explorer

SAFARI: FOR MACINTOSH OS 10-10.4
To enable the proxy server:
  • Open Safari
  • From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  • Double-click on Advanced
  • Next to Proxies click Change Settings...
  • Click on the Web Proxy (HTTP) radio button
    • Use automatic configuration settings
    • In the text box labeled "Address" enter the URL: http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  • Press the Apply Now button
FOR MACINTOSH OS 10.4.2:
  • In System Preferences > Network > double click on your current network connection > Proxies > Select Web Proxy (HTTP)
  • In the Web Proxy Server box, type
    abacus.bates.edu:81
  • Put a check in Proxy server requires password
  • Click the Set Password...
  • Enter your Bates Username and Password
  • Click Ok
  • Click Apply Now
  • To turn the Proxy Server off, uncheck Web Proxy (HTTP)
  • Note: All web pages accessed while the Proxy Server is on will be logged. Please use the Proxy Server only to access Bates related materials.
  • To disable the proxy server:
    • Deselect the Web Proxy button (Step 5)
    • Then press the Apply Now button
LOGIN:
  • When you have installed these preferences correctly on your machine, and you attempt to open a protected site from off-campus, a dialog box will appear asking for authentication:
  • Enter your network user name and password
