Bobcat Crews Wrap Up ECAC Championships with Super Sunday
5/10/ 2004

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bates College rowing team rebounded from a rough start to the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta with a great day of racing on Sunday as the women's second varsity eight won the petite final and the women's varsity eight was edged by 2003 NCAA Champion Colby in the "C" final on Lake Quinsigamond.

The varsity women, rowing as Sienna Vorono '05 (Navato, Calif.), Alexis Grossman '07 (Piedmont, Calif.), Lauren Reynolds '05 (Endwell, N.Y.), Laura French '07 (Etna, N.H.), Jeanethe Falvey '07 (Phippsburg, Maine), Katie Liston '07 (Newport, R.I.), Elizabeth Diamond '04 (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), Kate Kemp '05 (Duxbury, Mass.), and coxswain Sachi Cole '07 (Brookhaven, N.Y.) finished fifth in the qualifying heat on Saturday, which placed them in the "C" final.

Colby and Bates separated themselves from the field early in the race on Sunday, and the lead changed hands several times.  In the final 500 meters, the Mules snuck ahead of Bates to edge the Bobcats by 0.85 seconds. Both crews posted faster times than the entire petite final field and two crews from the grand final under nearly identical conditions. While the Bobcats finished 14th, the crew posted the sixth fastest time on Sunday.

The women's second varsity also had a disappointing start tempered by an outstanding effort on Sunday. The Bobcats finished in fourth in Saturday's heat, just one spot from earning a spot in the grand final, but the team came back to win the petite final by nearly five seconds.

The women's novice eight made the grand final by winning its heat and posting the fastest time of the day on Saturday. The Bobcats finished fourth in the grand final, but were less than a second from second place in a tight three-team battle for runner-up honors. Colby won the race by more than four seconds.

The men's varsity eight finished third in the third level final, just over two seconds behind Holy Cross. Like the varsity women, the varsity men just missed a spot in the semifinals but responded with a solid race, posting the ninth-fastest time in Sunday's finals.

The men's second varsity eight was sixth in the petite final in a tough field on Sunday.
